You can use both the lighter as well as the power port with the car off. How do you think I charge my cel phone when Im at work.

Thanks: I was hoping for that answer;
I want to hook up one of those solar battery trickle chargers:

The cigarette lighter was in the car when i got it used, the lighter it self was missing, and since I'm not a smoker i didn't want to buy a lighter, so i have a look a like plug filling the hole, not even sure the lighter itself is hooked up,but i know the accessory is....

thanks.......

I know its a little late and all but ummm yeah, the lighter doesnt get red it gets grey. Think about the stove when you have it up too damn high. The burner goes from red to grey because it got so hot it past the red hot stage.

I will admit I as well found that out the hard way. My grandfather had an old ford ranger that the lighter didnt work in it so I changed out the fuse and the lighter and popped it in and once it popped out I didnt feel any heat so figured the fixes didnt work so I put my finger on it......it was fixed.
