Hey everyone, I have a 94 chevy 1/2 ton that I am puting a 383 stroker in. This is a low budget project. I am in the process of building the motor and kind of ran into a fork int the road. I went with a 1969 350 4 bolt main block that I recently had bored for the stroker kit. I would like to keep this motor fuel injected (TBI), due to the fact this is my daily driver and I already have the setup in the truck. I have already purchased an edelbrock perfomer TBI intake for 88-95 chevys. I also intend to bore the throttle body and add larger injectors.
My problem is this: I have the option of getting a set of 65-67 Camelback heads 194cc for basicallly free. I am wondering if anyone could help me with this. Will the intake match up to the heads? Should I use the cameback heads, or is there a better set of heads that will work for my situation/ budget? Any advise or Ideas are welcome. Thanks. |

Re: 383 stroker, converting to 4 bolt main, keep TBI?
The older style heads will not work with the stock intake. I ran into that prob during the building of the 283 for my 88. You may want to check your edelbrock catalog, and send your intake back. I know they make a kit for the old heads to go with the TBI set up.

Re: 383 stroker, converting to 4 bolt main, keep TBI?
I'm looking for more power out of my 95.
What heads would work on it? Is the Edelbrock tbi intake worth the money power wise? Would the 96 and up vortec heads work? Are they any better than the 95 heads? I would like to get a set of low cost alum. heads if I can find them. How do you bore the tbi TB. Is there a bigger tb.that will work on the tbi trucks? |

Re: 383 stroker, converting to 4 bolt main, keep TBI?
Doubt the old heads would be worth the trouble. A lot of little improvements over 25-30 years add up: the Chevy engineers know what they're doing! Another thing, do these old heads have seat inserts installed to work with unleaded gas? And how much higher will the compression ratio of the '60s heads be on top of the bigger 383 cylinders? Assume you'll be running 91 octane tops.
I have the Edelbrock intake on my recently-installed 383. Hard to say how much it contributed because I also put on a Crane RV cam, World 1.94 iron heads, headers, etc. at the same time. I drive 30,000 miles a year so I had it built for torque with 9.3 to 1 compression to run on regular gas. As far as I can tell, the main thing the Edelbrock manifold does is raise the injectors 1/4". This is usually a good thing, but you can buy a set of spacers that do this on the stock manifold for around $35. If you have the budget, Vortec heads give at least 30 more hp. Problems are they require a $400 GM-only manifold to mate with the TBI and I've heard rumblings from rebuilders that these heads often are fragile and prone to cracking in the combustion chambers. You CAN get more power from a TBI, but if you want the most possible performance and mpg in a smog-legal package, I would check the salvage yards for a TPI/Vortec set-up. |
