RPM's running high...

I got into my truck this evening and started it up and noticed that she was running a little higher pitch than usual. The RPM's were at 2500 in park. When I put it into drive they went down to 1500. When I put it into nutral the RPM's shot up again. When I put it into park it makes a nasty grinding noise and runs high on the RPM's. This one has me stumped, any ideas were I should probally look first?

Any feedback is gratly appreciated.

My first thoughts would be the IAC or a vacuum leak. When it drives, is it low on power? Do you hear any 'howling noises'? You might check the base idle voltage at the TPS, just as a sanity check. I've heard of people cleaning their IACs with success, but I've heard of just as many failures.

Any Codes? (Not sure what year of Ranger, this will only work on 96 and lower models.)

Just a question, it really could be a lot of different things.. Has the intake been modified in anyway? If the heated intake system has been removed, and it's extremely cold outside, it may be suffering from a frozen throttle body.

98 ranger 3.0 4x4, should have had that up there first.
Well today I cleaned out the throttle body and the problem went away. It was reving high, no power loss.
For those who may do a search on this in the future, or just for your knowledge, if ever you have the symptoms I have described the first places to look would be:

1) vaccum leak (hoses and such)
2) Throttle position sensor
3) the IAC as Pete has mentioned above.
4) or it could be a gummed up throttle body needing some cleaning.

Easy fixes so dont panic!
Anyone please correct me if I am wrong.
Pete thanks for the feedback!

No, thank you! I never would have thought that a dirty throttle body would cause such a high idle.
