Ive got the very same Jeep you do, same year, same color, same engine, its even a Rio Grand. I do have 4" of lift and Super Swampers and a few other mods on it though.
I hate to say it but without throwing a bundle of $$$ at it, you wont see anything but very small power increases if any. Ive got a high flow exhaust, an open air filter and a 4.0 throttle body. If I had to do it again, I wouldnt even bother with any of it. The only power mod Ive done thats been worth the money is 4.88 gears.
If youve got the money laying around, theres a company that makes a nice supercharger kit for it. I dont know what they run and Ive never checked into getting one.

The cheapest power multiplier is likely putting a new set of gears in. The 2.5 is pretty bulletproof, but you're not going to see a lot of power out of it.

Re: jeep performance ideas

I've been looking into turboing the 2.5L a little bit, and it deffinately seems possible (assuming you have a 5spd so you can simply replace the clutch). I'd recommend a small ball bearing turbo (for power at low revs) and water injection instead of, or in addition to, an intercooler. I can't see this beeing any cheaper than $1.5k for parts. If I end up getting a 4cyl, I'm sure I'll turbo it, and I'll update a thread with all the details.

Re: jeep performance ideas

The water injection would be better for a turbo while off-roading because there won't be a 70mph wind!
