Would this be a fair price in your opinion?

So after having driven a 91 Q45 for a year and a half, it is time for a change. I am 23 years old and make a good living, so I am wanting a car that will be fun. This car will be a daily commuter for me but also the weekend fun car.

Anyways, I have a coworker/friend who is now 51 who bought a 97' VR4 during his self-proclaimed mid life crisis. He has immaculate records going down to oil changing (does them himself on the 1st every 3 months). The car has 71,000 miles, is completely stock, and he is a rather modest driver. He is asking $15,400 for it, which appears to be on-par with kbbs "private party" pricing. I am taking it to a mitsubishi dealer tomorrow to check it out inside and out (have already driven it). Because he is a co-worker/friend I don't want to be nickle and diming him over the price. Live in Washington, BTW.

Also, is there anything in particular to check out on it?

Thanks

Make sure it received the 60k service. Check the oil pressure and drive it and check to see if it shifts good(ie no grinding). If everything checks out then that is a very good price.

Yeah, it received the 60k service (complete records on everything). The shifting was very smooth and quick, very enjoyable.

Around that mileage are there any major problems that are likely to happen?

**edit**

Also, what is the expected mileage? Factory claims 18/24, but that seems a tad unrealistic to me...

Not unrealistic at all. Factory claimed 19/24 for my base model and I see 20mpg driving agressively and has had as much as 28mpg on a trip with most of the trip seeing 80mph with the crappy NA gearing. If you stay out of boost you can see very good numbers.

Gotcha. My everyday driving, I would probably never go into the boost and my longer trips would be similar.

as long as you stay below about 3000 RPMS you'll be fine (that's where the turbo's spool) and if you do get it, post some pictures

Re: Would this be a fair price in your opinion?

Will do. Probably would be 1 week out of buying it still (assuming it gets clean bill of health tomorrow) and I also have another car I will be checking out tomorrow (99 BMW 540i with 55,000 miles for $21,000). Figuring with the $7,000 I would be saving (he would also "gift" the title to me so I wouldn't have to pay tax) I would immediately put some modest looking rims and some really nice tires on it and then look into suspension upgrades.

aww BMW? you gotta go with the GT man. Nothing against bmrs, theyre nice cars, but you said you wanted something fun.

Forget the price difference, just park them next to each other and see which one catches your eye lol

Seriously though man, good luck with whichever you chose.

I like the fact that my car appears to be worth around $200,000 to some people.

That's awesome! When I bought my car, I wasn't even asking to get it as a gift but just a bit lower so the tax would be lower but dude was like totally against the idea...

But yeah, if...*cough*...when you get the GT (LOL ), post pics PLEASE!
