Thumbs up 1998 SL2 Engine Swap

I have a '98 SL2 that all of the seals are leaking. I got a really good deal on a DOHC with 45000 miles and after speaking with a junkyard, found out that the junkyard bible says that only a 98 can swap with a 98. The only thing that I know about the engine that I bought is that it came out of a wrecked SC2.

Any information on whether anything else will swap with a 98 or why it won't work would be greatly appreciated.

Also does Saturn put any stamp or something on the engine that can tell us what year it came from? Every thing I have been told says to use the VIN #.

The only difference that I see between the engines is the valve cover currently in the car is plastic and the other is aluminum.

Thanks

Re: 1998 SL2 Engine Swap

1994 used a black composite or an aluminum valve cover.

ok with s-series cars, the 1.9 dohc is swappable practically throughout its run for 91-02. i really stay away from the 91-92 motors since they are slightly different and i just dont trust them. im running a blank on the years when things change, but like 95 or 96 the egr valves went from vaccum to electrical. the engine blocks are pretty much unchanged and sohc and dohc blocks are the same. and on the 95 back heads there are 2 sensors in the side of the head above the transmission unlike the 96 and newer with just one. just stay away from 91-92 motors, some sensors are different and a motor mount, but for the most part everything can swap, just need to watch for the little things. but things do change and i cant remember how everything works out, and need not want to write everything, but on the like 99 newer ones the internals changed a bit but compression and stroke and everything remained unchanged. and 99 or 00 or something through there, the intake manifolds changed to vertical throttle bodies from the horizontal intake/throttle body.

but then too, what did the sc2 look like? if you could describe it. if you saw it, then i could put you within years that the motor is. but if you notice on the side of the head, flywheel side, there should be a sensor in there. if there is 2 then its 95 or older, if theres one its 96 or newer. and really if its 96 or newer it should work fine, just when that if you have the vertical throttle body swap the intake manifolds on your old motor to the new one
