02 oddyssey RPM surge?

our 02 odyssey has recently developed an RPM surge. it's really only noticed at idle. when in park, with the engine running, the RPM will rise and fall, and I have noticed it a few times wile sitting at a red light, with light preasure on the breaks, the RPM will rise enough to make the van kinda creep forward for just a second. I'm not to familuar with the honda engines (this is my first honda, last vehicle was a dodge ram), and I was wandering if someone could point me in the right direction of where to look?
thanks,
Keith

RPM surge

Just purchased an 03 Odyssey EX-L (pre-owned with 26K miles) and on the 2nd day of ownersho\ip my wife reported a very similar incident to the onw you have described. Have you had additional incidneces of this RPM run-up at idle? Have you had the problem investigated and/or fixed yet?

Re: 02 oddyssey RPM surge?

have the power steering pressure switch checked. The wires that go into the two pin connector break off and the PCM doesn't get the proper signal from the pressure switch and the idle surges. I had a handfull of these already.

Re: RPM surge

I work as a Sales Consultant for a Lexus dealership and in talking to one of our mechanics who used to work for Acura, he indicated to me that if my engine coolant level was not high enough, it can cause this kind of RMP irregularity through some convoluted interations with the temp sensor electronics.

Re: 02 oddyssey RPM surge?

I haven't gotten it fixed yet, but we have been having some cooler weather here, and RPM surge seems to have gone away. with what was said above, I'm leaning towards the problem being with the temp sensor or cooling system, however, I'll check the powersteering thing as well, which is a new one to me, I've never owned anything with a preasure switch for the power steering.

I have been having two problems with my '02 Odysssey (26K miles) in regards to the surge issue. The engine has surged giving more power to the car and while driving or stopped and the RPM's have gone up while driving. I step on the gas and the RPM's go up, but the car doesn't respond. My warranty has expired, I purchased an aftermarket one, though the EGR valve isn't covered. I did find a letter from Honda from a couple of years ago about extending the warranty for the EGR valve. It describes a lack of power as well as a surge. This sounded like my problem so I contacted Honda and brought the car to the dealer for a diagnosis. They found nothing wrong with the car. I got a call at about 3:30 pm saying it might not be seen until tomorrow or monday (this was on a friday) and about an hour and a half later saying the car was ready, nothing wrong. I'm told it was test driven with no signs of any problems, therefore I have to pay for the diagnostic check. I ask to talk to the service guy, no good, it's after hours. I talk to the hack I left the car with and I'm told no codes came up, though the problem of carbon build up won't show up on a computer diagnosis! I pay and leave. I left the trip meter at 0 and got it with 3/10, no way did they road test it. I took the car to my mechanic who explained what they would've had to do to get to the carbon build up near the EGR valve and there's no way they did it in that short period of time. The problem with these scum dealerships is they don't let the "A" mechanics work on the car until the car comes back a couple of times. More visits, more money for them! I'm not gonna bother, my mechanic is fixing it. Sorry to have rambled, but I HATE dealerships. I love the Honda product, but dealing with Honda is another issue. If you're having surge problems it could be the EGR valve and you're "supposed" to be covered.
