Starter Model
Hey guys just checked out hobby lobby and walmart and they have some nice kits. Can anybody tell me what a good starter model is? I've biult revell civic coupe newer version but never painted it and than i took it apart. The wheels didn't stand too good but I didn't try to fix that. Can somebody tell me about their integra and how are the wheel on it? How bout the AMT camaro 1969?
Thanks |

Re: Starter Model
The Revell Integra and Civic kits are pretty much the same, except for the obvious differences in the dimensions and interior details. The engines are even the same among all three kits.
They would be pretty good for a first-time build if you pay a little attention to the fit: Some things need to be held in place for a second when you glue it, in order to line up when it's all set. They are a little easier because there isn't a lot to paint either: Besides a red engine block and some silver engine and exhaust parts, and the brakes, the whole chassis and interior is semigloss black. |

Re: Starter Model
It depends on where you go: The Krylon stuff or whatever in Walmart is OK, and of course the Testors paint is good too. If you have a local hobby shop, try getting some Tamiya paint, spray cans for the body and chassis, and some brush paint for the rest. Be sure to get some primer for whatever spray paint you use.

You need a good old Tamiya kit.. It's been said before, but I'll repeat it, Tamiya for starting out is the best.. Open to debate..!!
I'm thinking Boxster, S2000 or even a Z Tune... These kits are easy, just as long as you stay away from complex colours or two tone seats.. Z tune is a two tone red /black seat, but it can be anything you want.. Tamiya kits have superb fitment, great build guides and best of all, WINDOW Masks..!! Get a Z Tune, some TS -17 and read the FAQ. Get some Tamiya arcylics and even a cheapo badger 150 airbrush and read, try and read again. You are sure to have fun.. I learnt building Tamiya kits, great why to get into the hobby.. Best of luck.. |

Re: Starter Model
Some people will say Revell are the best for started because they cost less. But I say get a Tamiya. It will cost more, yes, but it will be easier and have more change to end up with a nice result.
I Don't say Revell are bad, but if you want good result, you have to have some experience since it have many problem. Tamiya, if you take your time and don't hand brush the body, you will end with a very acceptable model in your first try... Oh, and taking time don't mean doing the kit in a weekend ![]()

I agree... Take your time, spray the body and with a Tamiya kit it's going to look pretty decent if you don't rush and do the best you can. It's about having fun, you don't want to be worrying about ride, fitment etc.. Tamiya kits are precise. The kits from around 1999 onwards have Windows Masks, and I think the extra 5 - 10 bucks is well worth it. Stay away from models with complex decal schemes.. The look nice on the box but decals are a learned skill.. Takes time.. The Calsonic Skylines are OK, but the Xnavia (Spelling..??) are much harder... I'd get a Z Tune or S2000... Really good models to start out with.. Or a modena 360.. That's not too bad.. |

Re: Starter Model
Just my two cents here... I strongly recommend starting with an AMT or Revell kit. No need to start with a Snap-tite mind you, but a decent skill 2. I gotta say I'm happy that I started with the American kits before trying a Tamiya--the instructions are a little daunting, sometimes custom paint mixing is required, there's tons more parts (unless it's an easy curbside kit) etc... I'd say it's also easier to start spraypainting on larger American cars that have flatter/wider panels, IMO.

If i were you i would buy a Tamiya kit. get a simple curbside kit (no engine). get some liquid glue, the testors tube stuff sucks. and get Tamiya spray paint in the color of the body you want and get a can of Semi-gloss black. paint the body the color of your choice and spray every thing else Semi-gloss (like the interior, chassis etc...). you can get a jar of Tamiya Silver acrylic if you want to detail the interior and tail pipes. this will cost about $40-50 and you will get a good looking model in the end! promise. just take your time and dont worry about the details. as you get better at modelling youll learn the rest. good luck!

Re: Starter Model
i learned with revell and amt and thats all i ever build i dont hate tamiya i just hate the fact theres rarely an engine with their kits. just pick out a model you see that you like and do whatever you want to it make it unrealistic if thats how you want it!!!

Re: Starter Model
i also would advice for a tamiya kit. If you are a porsche-fan Look at the GT2-GT3. Verry easy kits and the fit is super. I think the Z350 and the S2000 are also in the same leage. And they aren't THAT more expensive..

Re: Starter Model
Your local hobby shop. No Wal Mart or K-mart will stock them.
