91 ranger 4X4 wont go into low range

I am having issues with a ranger i got it goes into 4 wheel fine but will not go into low range. when I got the truck the guy said that it wouldent start with the key so he installed a button in the dash for starting so I am wondering if there is something with a clutch switch that isent letting it go into low range or that if something else might be wrong. I was thinking in my head tht if it wouldent start with the key then mabey the switch in the tranny was bad that might explain why it wouldent turn over with the key and mabey why it wont go into low range. If somone has an idea on what I am talking baout let me know I am really puzzled BTW it is a stick

Re: 91 ranger 4X4 wont go into low range

I am assuming you have the push button 4WD.With two '90 Rangers I have,I had problems getting one out of low range .I found that the shift motor wouldn't move the shifter far enough,so I had to manually move it to 4W hi/2W hi then when I shifted it back into low it stuck again.I then mechanically locked it out of low.The other Ranger is my work truck, and the shift light would flash low 4WD without shifting.I seldom need low so I leave it alone, but I believe it is the lack of use that causes the problem.Ialso have found the shift module prone to poor connections.

OK well here is what I found in playing with this for a day
Fist thing was that the damn guy who had the truck before me Half ashed everything in the truck the Solioid wire wasent hooked p to the starter LOL and as for the low range and starting problems It was a bad clutch switch. Ez repair but not a cheap switch at 50 dollers
