A few things with my 944, please help

Hi my names mitch. I recently acquired an 85.5 a week or so ago from a friend. I had to weld one of the headers back together, most the original welds had cracked, and I just got an exhaust flange gasket to go in after the Cat, which ill have to do soon.

My Dashlight never works, and my blinkers usually dont blink. Is this just fuses/ bulbs, or will I have to take the cluster out? And sometimes my heater stays on too...

A thunk occurs when i step on the gas suddenely when coasting, im guessing this could be a shot motor-mount, but im not for sure.

And lastly, if anyone knows where to get some aftermarket headers for a decent price, let me know.

Re: A few things with my 944, please help

The clunking when stepping on the gas sounds like a failing original rubber centered clutch. The rubber centers fall apart and you will get a clunk when you let off the gas and get back on it. When you do the clutch get a spring centered. Check the manual on which fuses the lights could be, these cars tend to corrode over the years and connections will stop working. It also isn't hard to check if the bulbs are bad... I think the 85.5 had the vaccuum controlled heater, so I'm not sure on that. Are you sure you want aftermarket headers? You probably won't get anything out of them and they will be alot more expensive than used originals (which I have never had any problems with)

Re: A few things with my 944, please help

Well I stopped in to the local imports mechanic to figure out what was up with my car...ends up the constant clicking that stops when i push in the clutch just barely, was my cruise control...unplugged it and the noise stopped

Then he noticed another problem under the hood, a fuel leak at the 1st and 3rd pistons, im gonna tear the fuel rail off tonight i hope to see if its o-rings (fingers-crossed) or if i need new injectors....$160ea

So its not a motor mount but the clutch, huh...well, anyone know where i can find some reasonably priced parts?

Re: A few things with my 944, please help

I ordered bosch injectors from autozone for about $60-$70 a piece I believe. The clutch job sucks REALLY bad, I spent 4 full days doing mine. If you are going to get one order it through www.vertexauto.com Call them and say you saw their ad in excellence, power friction clutch kit-$389 (spring centered clutch, pressure plate, and T/O bearing). The clunking should be the clutch though, does it do it before and after coasting, and the car shudders a little when it does it?

Re: A few things with my 944, please help

Whenever i let out the clutch a little rough, you can hear it engage with a little clunk, but the car wont "jerk" but say if you step on the gas kind of suddenly then she jerks, and when you get off of it as well...I havent looked through the manual yet, but when i did my exhuast it looked like the engine "sits" on top of the tranni, am i right?

Thanks for the info on the parts, im definetly not gonna pay an extra $100+ more for injectors, if thats where my leak is.

Re: A few things with my 944, please help

I was able to avoid the shudder by easing on and off of the throttle slowly, but when I let on and off with normal speed or quickly I would get the clunk and shudder. I also recently had a slight knock sometimes when I would let the clutch out in first to begin moving, that turned out to be a CV joint going bad. The 944 has a trans-axel. The transmission is between the rear wheels connected to a torque tube which runs to the bellhousing on the back of the engine.

Re: A few things with my 944, please help

That makes a lot more since, I didnt lift up the back of the car to check that part out, but i did notice the torque tube and thats what gave me the impression that the engine was above the tranni.

Other than that, it sounds like i might have a bad clutch 4 days you say, did you run into problems, or is that how long it takes?

Re: A few things with my 944, please help

I ran into a huge problem. The job for the most part is straight forward. Remove exhaust, tranny, slide torque tube back, remove release pin on bell housing, remove bellhousing. It's the pin that sucks. Some people don't have a problem with it, but on my car it would NOT budge, we had hydraulic fingers in there exerting massive force on it and it wouldn't even move... If you are going to tackle the job check out the forum in my sig. Do a search for the clutch job and you will find alot of useful advice.

Re: A few things with my 944, please help

That fuel leak i mentioned...i replaced all the o rings, got 4 injector kits, and i still got a leak...it drips down the front drivers side mounting bracket. I think it might be coming from the plug in the front, the other fitting right there, or at the top of the inector, but it looked alright when i took it off. the other leak is at the third injector but seems to be at the socket where the injector sits.

could i just put in some brass washers in the fittings, if so thats awesome, but what about the leak at the third...?

Re: A few things with my 944, please help

I found a turbo fuel rail on ebay, the regulator and damper seem to be in the same spot, is there any reason why i shouldnt use a fuel rail off a turbo, or would it be just fine?

Re: A few things with my 944, please help

I'm not sure about the fuel rail, the mounting points will be the same. I'm not sure if the ends of the n/a and turbo injectors are the same...
