79 ford

Hey i have a 1979 ford f-100 coustom and i am restoring it and my uncle gave it to me. The poblem is the motor has only about 65,000 on it "it was rebuilt". And it starts and runs fine but it sat for about two years in the woods so i drained the gas and oil put new in and new battery in it primed the carb and what do you know, she starts on the frist crank. To get to the problem the drive shaft stopped spining. I think and hope it is the torqe converter. Does any body know how hard and long it takes to pull one out and put a new one in? It has a 302 and a c4 tranny and it is 2wd.

Assuming it is the torque converter, it could take from a few hours to all day. It depends on the tools and equipment u have, if you have access to a lift, if you have a trans jack.........ect. You might want to take the pan off, and check the filter, and check for metal shavings and debris. Check the linkage and make sure its moving in the trans. Be reasonably sure its the converter. Thats alot of work to go through, to find out the trans is bad, and you could contaminate another converter with debris. If you do take it out, take it to a trans shop and have them check it for you. When you put it back, you have to install the converter in the trans, and stab them together. Rotate it as you push it in, youll hear it clunk 2 or 3 times, and go back farther each time, untill its in past the face of the bellhousing. This lines up the pump drive, and rotor and stator splines. Dont try bolting it to the flywheel, and stabbing the trans. The odds of everything lining up are almost nil. If you try it youll push the pump gears out the back of the housing, and probably ruin the neck of the converter. Good luck

Ya that is alot of work like you said and it is probly the trnny because it is original in the truck and never rebuilt. So the bands have probly snaped. I got quoted like $650 to get the tranny rebuilt. That is me taking the truck in them dropping it and rebuilding it and putting it back in, no tranny mounts or any thing just the tranny. Is this a good deal?

Well, thats about the going rate, +or- a little. Ive seen em anywhere from 500 to 1000$. If they do a good job, and give you a decent warranty, thats not a bad price. Its alot of work, if its done right. Make sure that cleaning, and flushing the cooler, lines and converter is part of the deal, or you could wind up with trash from them in your fresh rebuild. If you can swing the little extra cost, ask them to install a shift improver kit. It will improve the performance, and life of the trans, and be cheaper to install while they have it out. Good luck

Thats a decent warranty, and if theyre installing a new, or rebuilt converter, a good price. Theyll have to take the valve body apart for cleaning, as well as the rest ot the trans. anyway. So the installation of the shift kit wont require much extra labor. On a C4, i can install one in an hour, with it in the vehicle. (B&M brand) good luck
