making a dirtbike street legal?
well im looking at buying a wrecked bike to rebuild and ride and am wanting to get it street legal. i know i need a headlight, taillight, speedo. but do i need turnsignals? and whatelse do i need?
how hard is it to convert a dirtbike to have lights and such? well its been a while since i last rode and i know i can ride an older 250 as im riding my friends kawasaki 250 right now till i get a bike and i use to ride a honda 185. (both pre 1980 so they are heavy) and am wondering if i should get another 185 or upgrade to a 250. (im 5' 8", 145lbs, and medium build) also if im running on pavement should i invest in some on/offroad tires or just go slow on knobbies? the new bike is going to be around the same year as the other bikes as there cheaper and simplier then the newer bikes (no fuel injection, no computers, nothing to screwup.)

There is no fuel injection on newer dirt bikes.... in fact they are mechanically very similar to the very very old ones... so that should not be your issue....
as to the mods to make it street legal... you probably can't do it legitimately, but some people get away with it anyways... At least in MN, you need to have a METAL gas tank, a headlight and tail light.... it MUST be a 4 stroke unless it was made before 1977 (?, not sure on the date).. it doesnt need blinkers or a speedo... dirt knobbies will NOT last well on the tar (some companies make DS knobbies which would last much longer).... I would suggest dual sport tires, or maybe trials tires (which should hook up decent for both)

go to bajadesigns.com, they provide kits for bikes to make them dual purpose. If i were you, id go with a XR250 or XL250 by honda. Like 1986-to present year. They are cheap and run great. If you do buy a bike, you have to make sure that the seller has a valid title. You cant register it with out a title.

he has some good points... but the bikes he lists are NOTHING like a KX 250 .... I don't know how much an old DRZ/KLX might cost, but they are decent at trail riding machines, and the S version came street legal....

I got a 1994 klx 250 for 800$ and its a great trail bike. Its better than the honda xr because the klx is water cooled. The kit to make it a dual purpose is only 420$ and its only 95$ a year for insurance.
