96 GA Stuck in Park
1996 V6 Auto. The car is running normally, but I cannot get it out of park. The button on the shift lever will not depress. I have checked the microswitches on the brake pedal and they appear to be working normally.
I have seen references to some form of override, but I have not been able to find it myself. I removed the cover and shift knob and looked for a release, but could not see anything obvious. I did note a small pop-off panel on the passenger side of the console and wondered if it gave access to the mysterious override, but it did not seem to do anything. I did try to unplug the connectors from the microswitches, but there must be a trick to it that eluded me. I even considered trying to short out the contacts somehow, but since I don't have a wiring diagram I decided not to try. Any ideas? Thanks |

Remove the pop off panel on the side of the console, that gives you access to the solenoid that locks the shifter in park. Pull the arm out of the way and you can shift the car. Check your fuses, I believe it runs off the interior light fuse but I'm not too sure.
