abs problem

the problem i have is that when i go down a hill at a step grade about 10 mph or less and i apply the brakes no matter how hard the abs kicks in. i've been driving before and it will kick in when it doesn't need to and other times it won't kick in when it should hence sliding. i looked the truck up and theirs a recall out for it. this is what i found: Component: Service Brakes, Hydraulic: Antilock
Defect Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN 4-WHEEL DRIVE PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ABS (ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM) MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 1989 THROUGH AUGUST 1996. UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS THE SWITCH WHICH SIGNALS THE ABS SYSTEM WHETHER THE VEHICLE IS IN 2-WHEEL OR 4-WHEEL DRIVE CAN MALFUNCTION CAUSING INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCES DURING ABS STOPS WHILE IN THE TWO-WHEEL DRIVE MODE.
Consequence Summary: IF THIS OCCURRED AT A TIME WHEN MINIMUM STOPPING DISTANCE WAS REQUIRED, A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
Corrective Summary: DEALERS WILL REPLACE OR REPAIR THE 4-WHEEL/2-WHEEL DRIVE SWITCH.
this happened to me. i was going about 20 mph slammed the brakes and i don't remember if the abs kicked in but i do remember i had enough stopping distance but when i hit the brakes it didn't feel like the truck was really trying to stop. does any body know where the switch is and how to test it or if they had theirs that had a recall on it fixed and did it do anything? anything would help.
and i know this i deffently have: Component: Visibility: Windshield Wiper/washer
Defect Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: LIGHT DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, 2 AND 4-WHEEL DRIVE. SOLDER JOINTS NEAR THE WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR CAN CRACK CAUSING THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS TO WORK INTERMITTENTLY.
Consequence Summary: THIS CONDITION CAN RESULT IN INOPERATIVE WIPERS, REDUCING A DRIVER'S VISIBILITY, AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
Corrective Summary: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT BOARD AND COVER.

80% of the time they work. others they don't.

Re: abs problem

yep, you found my problem. But i replaced the whole hub, because i couldnt just buy the abs sensor to fix the problem. Some say that you can take apart the sensor and clean any dirt that might be in the way causing the problem, but i think in my case the bearing was going bad as well so i just replaced the whole hub.

Re: abs problem

got the part today and tested the one thats on the truck. it was stuck closed causeing it to tell the abs computer it was in 4X4. switch cost $12 and some cents my cost. norm price was 26 something. called insurence and they said that since its a recall issue they will drop the raise in insurence do to that. this should fix the problem.

Re: abs problem

some bad news. i installed it today and didn't seem to made a diff. so i hooked up a scanner to it and according to the ABS it was in 4X4. so i pulled the plug out of the switch and the computer then said it was out of 4X4. i played with it for prob about 3 hours and nothing seemed to come of it. all i can think of is the the front diff isn't pulling out of 4X4. i know this is a common problem so it prob is. it would also explain the tires wearing fast and the loss in gas mileage. i plan to play with it more tomarrow. heres the thing i do know. no fuses are blown. the transffer case is coming out of 4X4 its just the front axle thats not. vac holds at 20 with the engine off and holds about 20 with it running. i'm going to pull the bat out tomarrow and check the vac switch thats under that switches the diff. anybody delt with this before and any idea what a new vac switch might be?
