Clutch Pedal

Yesterday I was going on a trip to a nearby city when my clutch pedal started feeling really light. The clutch point was really close to the floor also. It started getting pretty hard to shift. I made it back alright though. When I got home I had to run to the store and the pedal was back to normal. It was fine all there and back. This morning, I got in to go to school and it wouldn't shift at all and the clutch had no resistance. I don't know much about clutches but I guess it has something to do with the clutch plate or return spring or something like that. If anyone knows what might be wrong please help. It's tough not having my car.

Master cylinder most likely. Maybe slave.

Re: Clutch Pedal

what jordan said... luckily both parts are cheap and easy to install. just be SURE to completely bleed your system after you are done... if not, you WILL get air in the lines and you will be up crap creek with no paddle in sight.

Re: Clutch Pedal

mine did the same thing...it was the slave cyl....20$ from autozone... my prob was, sometimes if i didnt FULLY press in the clutch, it would slowly go all the way to the floor and then stick there... then it would stop, next day it would be real soft and then stop... if your too cheap to buy a new slave cyl for a couple weeks (like me) make sure you have a BIG bottle of brake fluid so you can fill up your clutch resivour like every day...i only did this for like 3 days and then i forgot and it left me stranded on the side of the road and i broke down and finally bought if at autozone... lol

hope this helps!

Re: Clutch Pedal

Awesome, thanks for the info. I was about to go buy a new slave cylinder, but my friend suggested checking the fluid level. It was empty so I guess air had gotten in the lines. We bled the system and it works like a charm. I don't know why it was out, hopefully I don't have a leak, but if I do I'll know what to do. Thanks for everything.

Re: Clutch Pedal

you probably still have a leak... the clutch hydraulic system is a closed system. There's not really anywhere for fluid to "go". I would definitely keep an eye on your levels. Another easy way to check is to park your car on light colored pavement/cement, or lay a scrap towel under it, and pump your pedal.. pump it at a rate of about once a second (down and back, down and back) for about 5 mins or so, and see if there's any fluid on the ground. My slave cylinder actually broke in half after a track accident, and upon looking under my car and pumping the pedal, it was actually a stream out... looked like my car was peeing or something. Needless to say, she was towed home.

Re: Clutch Pedal

oh my gosh people just change your clutch master cylinder and slave sylinder. Like $80 in parts and an afternoon under your car. Trust me a new transmission is a lot more expensive than a new master and slave cylinder.. especially on DOHC motors.
