Hello, My wifes '99 Lumina is making a really bad clunking noise from the rear strut. Could someone give me directions on how to replace them. I am quite handy and do all my own work but have not replaced struts before. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance, Dan |

Re: 1999 Lumina rear struts
Its simple, you need to get one of the strut cartridges, the removal tool, and some time and patience lol. the struts run around $40 a piece. but go to one of the places where you buy 3 and get the forth free. im about to do mine, and my tires as soon as my next couple of paychecks come in.

May not be the strut, could be the upper mount.

Re: 1999 Lumina rear struts
I agree with Maxwedge, It's most likely the upper mounts. I just replaced the rear struts and mounts on my '96 Lumina with some minor issues. The hardest part of the job IMO was trying to get the strut to knuckle bolts out. I had to heat them up with a propane torch. I also bought replacement nuts to hammer on when trying to get the bolts out. Here is another tip that was not listed in my manual. Remove the interior rear deck and seat belt housing to get better access to all three strut to body nuts. Once removed, I could torque the nut to spec. Hope this helps.
