It sounds like it's time to replace the starter. It sounds like the solenoid may be sticking allowing the starter to stay engaged after you release the key. It also could be a be other items. How many miles on this car? If it's been used for short trips the starter has had a lot of starts. If the car still starts you could take it to some place and have the starter tested. The will measure how many amps the starter is drawing. You could take it appart and clean it up....(I would get a manual and follow it). This is what I generally do. Although I've been working on my own cars since I've had one. Good luck If you questions post/PM me and I'll try to help you out Regards Dan |

Sounds like the starter bendix is gone. If you are able to remove the starter yourself and take it in, you can save some $ by not replacing the whole starter. Some specialty shops will replace the bendix (and bearings and brushes while they are at it) for about $50 or so.

Re: 1998 starting problem
The crank sensor has nothing to do with how the starter functions, however you do need a good starter for the crank sensor to function properly.
