Ignition or Starter?
I have a random problem with starting my 91 S-10 Blazer. Every now and then I can't start it. It hasn't ever stalled or cut out on me. But sometimes I get in and it won't start. When I turn the key to the run position all the lights come on so I have power, but when I turn it to start, nothing happens. Theres no sound of the starter engaging, but the fuel pump primes. The engine won't turn over, and after 20-30 mins of turning the key it catches and turns over and fires right up. Is this the ignition switch or could it be the starter solenoid? Any info or help on this would be greatly appreciated, this is starting to drive me nuts and i'm tired of parking somewhere and wondering if the truck is gonna start back up.

Well it could be the ignition switch, but i'd try the starter first. Get a hammer, have someone hold the key to "start". Tap on the starter. If it starts that is a very good sign its the starter. Or you can get a volt meter and see if your getting a signal to the solenoid. Again hold the key to start and check for voltage. Should be three wires. 1-ground 2- 12v constant 3- signal wire. If you really want to see if its the starter, just jump the solenoid with a wire. There are other reasons it may not be operating dont forget about the neutral saftey switch, this is the switch that allows you to only start the vehicle in neutral and park. It could also be the solenoid, but if thats the case i think you would have to buy a new starter anyhow. good luck

Re: Ignition or Starter?
It sounds like you mite have a bad connection. Check to make sure that your battery connections are good and tight with no corrosion. Also ensure that your battery is fully charged. If that all checks out. Then you mite want to look at the starter. First check to see if you have 12 volts coming into the starter with your key in the start position. If you do, replace the starter. If you don’t, trace wire back to locate possible broken or loose connection in wiring.

I'd suspect the starter.

You can have the starter checked for free at Advance or Autozone. That way you can pick up a new one while you're there. Have them check the solenoid too. Sometimes the connections where the plunger makes contact inside the solenoid can wear out.
