Cobalt SS n Civic (Si) opinions

Hey guys, this isn't a "who will win in a race" thread

I was having a discussion with a guy at work who just bought a new Civic (non Si) and was raving about its looks and performance.

We ended up getting in a pretty good dicsussion about Civic vs Cobalt SS, and Civic Si vs Cobalt SS

So I started to think if I had a gun to my head and had to choose... what would I choose

Civic or Cobalt SS (Cobalt SS hands down no contest)

Civic Si or Cobalt SS (I still can't decide)

I don't want this to turn import vs domestic, I would just like your opinions on which ones you would choose in each scenario, and why. Please no flaming, im a peace lovin brotha

Re: Cobalt SS n Civic (Si) opinions

I'd have to test-drive both to see which one's more fun to drive.

I'm sure the Cobalt is faster, especially in a straight-line, and my co-worker who owns one has told me about his Cobalt's good handling, but Honda's FWD handling history has been impeccable, and has always been the standard.

Re: Cobalt SS n Civic (Si) opinions

I'll assume you're talking about the 2006 Si?

Civic or Cobalt SS...I think that's no contest as you said.

IMO Civic Si>Cobalt SS>Civic

Although I diss Honda owners to no end, I do have a soft spot for well made Hondas because the technology they have been pumping into their engines in the last 10-20yrs has been quite amazing.

The 2006 Si looks to be a winner. It looks quite futuristic but not too much. Plus it's actually got power! I don't know if it's faster than the SS but I'm sure it can hold it's own. The power figures seem to be quite comparable to the DC2 Integra Type-Rs - which is another Honda that I love.

200hp, close ratio 6 speed...I hate to say it, by I don't think my car will be able to hang with a friggin civic on the highways.

Looks wise, the SS has that giant wing and fat ass combo, it doesn't fly with me (whereas the civic just has a fat ass, lol)

If we're talking about 2005 Si...it's a POS.

Re: Cobalt SS n Civic (Si) opinions

i honestly dont like the new look of the SI, so id take a cobalt in a heart beat. Boost > NA Plus in the next revision of the cobalt, like 06 or 07 they are rumored to be adding an AWD option.

Cobalt SS wins in my book. While i think the new SI is a major upgrade, it still doesnt quite do it for me.

I'll vote for the Si. Looks-wise they're both pretty ugly (IMO). But I like the Si's numbers better than the SS.

Civic Si:
197hp @ 7800 rpm 139tq @ 6200 rpm 2.0 litre

Cobalt SS
171hp @ ?rpm 163tq @ 5000 rpm 2.4 litre

If you were asking about an SC my opinion might change, but even with the supercharger the SS puts out 205hp...only 8hp more than the Si. That's pretty meager for a forced induction engine, but I'm sure that can be upgraded easily. If they do put out an AWD version they'd better give it more horses or it will be a heavy sled.

A non-performance related issue for the practical minded - Honda's have a better resale value than most Chevy's ('vette excluded of course). That says a lot about the build quality of the Honda.

Re: Cobalt SS n Civic (Si) opinions

I'm going to bet that the new SI will be a great car. I also really like the new look of the SI, it's got a lot in common with the ss/sc.

As for the performance comparison on these cars. The SS is sure to be a good amount faster than the SI in straight line excelleration and they will most likely have equal corning ability. I can't wait to run into one on the streets.

Although I wouldn't at all mind owning the new SI, I've got a soft spot for the bowties...regaurdless of how many things fall off. I'm still with the SS/SC.

The SS/SC puts down between 205-215 whp, which puts it around 235-245 BHP

I still think it's funny that the biggest Honda basher on the forums is a Honda owner. You crack me up Ace.

Re: Cobalt SS n Civic (Si) opinions

Civic Si>Cobalt SS>Civic

It took chevy forced induction to make just slightly more power than the Civic. Straight-line goes the Cobalt, handling will most likely go to the Si, comfort and styling goes to the Si (don't like the wing on the SS), reliabiltiy goes to the Si as well. I mean look at Bulldog, his SS is already on it's second engine (I know, it was the idiots fault, it's a joke). As for modifying, it's really a toss-up. Those K20s with iVTEC have been known to put down 260+ fwhp NA!!

I'll have you know my wing is good for 35 dyno proven HP.
www.ricermath.com told me so.

Sorry I edited my post as you were qouting me...I was giving props to the SC.

...but (and remember I'm not arguing with an SS/SC owner)...

http://www.chevrolet.com/cobalt/

...indicates 205hp (they don't say whp or bhp, but usually manufacturers don't give whp)...did they under-rate the hp numbers (Chevys been known to do that)?

Re: Cobalt SS n Civic (Si) opinions

the Cobalt SS S/C is 205 hp
for '06 there's also a Cobalt SS with a 2.4 Ecotec (Same engine as in the HHR) that puts out 171 hp. You can get it with an automatic while you can't get an SS S/C with one.

Think of it as the regular Sentra SE-R to the Sentra SE-R Spec V.
