Brand new it's a type of medium red for A/T. I remember helping a friend in shop class drain the fluid, and i got some of a sweatshirt and it NEVER came out, nomatter what I threw at it. Drained it probably varies depending on age, use, etc, but I would guess it looks a medium/dark brownish.

Dark to medium red , whats in your pic looks awful to say the least

Green or yellowish green is antifreeze

Re: What color is tranny fluid suppposed to be when drained?

that fluid doesnt look too bad.

the last tranny i had in my 92 tsi which lost 1st and 2nd gear, looked like a cross between anti-seize and silver metallic paint.

Re: What color is tranny fluid suppposed to be when drained?

if it an automatic dont use 75w90. autos use atf3 or 4

auto fluid is red new and should be redish brown if its in decent shape.
manual uses 75w90 gear oil so its just like thick brown oil. smells like shit when its old and burnt but it usually doesnt look a lot different
