Racing Mercedes Diesel...
I am using a Mercedes 190 E in a local tarmac rally. I took out the gas
4 cyl and put in a 5 cyl turbo diesel from a 300 SD. I am planning to add a supercharger , propane injection , and turn up the boost on my turbo to 20 pounds. I know the engine will not last too long like this, but it only has to last 5 days. Does anyone have any advice for me. I am sure problems will come up during R&D testing. That's why I have three other engines for testing. So if anyone has hopped up there diesel and have any tips, please leave a post. Thanks. Jason |

Re: Racing Mercedes Diesel...
Why are you adding a supercharger AND a turbocharger, the turbo is sufficient. add a really big exhaust post-turbo and some well tuned pipes pre-turbo so it spools up fast, you might be able to get a diesel tuner for that engine, they just tell it to put more fuel in, get it close to stoich so that you actually get an increase in power from your mods.
basically you need to burn more fuel to get more power, you can add alot of power just from making the injectors pump more fuel in because diesels are generally set very lean stock. adding more boost won't really add more power unless you tell your engine to dump more fuel. you can also increase compression, it'll help your fuel burn faster because of the extra heat and that might give you some more revs. the thing you need to worry about is ectra heat, you don't want to crack an exhaust manifold, diesels can easilly do that if you increase the boost and compression alot. With this extra power and torque, you'll need to beef up your tranny, get stronger internals, get a better clutch. that thing won't last long at all if you add like 300 hp and 400lbs of torque (very easy with diesel trucks, i don't know how the merc car diesels are) especially if it's the tranny from the gasoline engine you had. |

Re: Racing Mercedes Diesel...
if it was making 300bhp wouldn't it break past 400lb/ft barrier ?

Re: Racing Mercedes Diesel...
the only time that i have seen a turbocharger blowing into a supercharger was on a two stroke detroit diesel. in that setup the supercharger was refered to as a scavage pump and i think that i read somewhere that without it the turbo would not make boost, but i cannot remember how it was explained. the output was in the range of 600 Hp and over 1,000 ft/lb torque; the engine was governed at 3,250 rpm.
make sure that your cooling system is top notch. in fact if you can find a three flue radiator that will fit your car then that might be suficient, maybe an aluminum radiator might be better. what is the climate like in your area? |

Re: Racing Mercedes Diesel...
its not unknown for superchargers an turbo to be used alongside as it were, in fact i know someone that has this set-up.
reason for this was that any turbo lag wasnt good (duh) so the supercharger gave power outside the turbo's boost threshold. you should use a scania 16litre diesel V8 an quad turbo it, about 1,200-1,500+bhp an about 3,500lb/ft is probably possible..! the thing with huge tuning is what the rules and restrictions are in the rally, and gearing is a thing too, if its short straights an sharp bends you'll want short gearing, if its long tarmac stretches you might want higher gearing.

Re: Racing Mercedes Diesel...
Thanks everyone for your reply's. The race is called Targa. We hold it in Newfoundland Canada. It is a seven day event. We travel 1350 miles all over the inland, with over 350 miles of NO SPEED limits on local roads. The climate during the race is about 70-80. There is no real limit to what you can do to your car. As long as it is safe. I will be using different tranny then the old stocker.
