Clunking and tranny whine

1996 Cherokee 6cyl 4.0HO AT 127K

Hello all. Just bought this vehicle. Have read several posts already that have touched on the subj matter. One question regarding the tranny whine is this a common occurrence. Are Jeep AT's prone to noise? The guy I bought it from states the noise started about 20K miles ago. Pitch of whine does change with acceleration. Does not whine in neutral.

Also, when coming to a stop there is a slight bump and clunking noise. Have read some good posts re engine and tranny mounts and obviously hoping that this is the culprit. My concern is that the clunk and the whine are related and internal to the AT. One final note: had friend rev engine while standing on brake. The engine has normal twisting torque but also had a fore & aft movement of about an inch. Again, suspect motor and/or AT mounts. Any thoughts? Appreciate your experiences and inputs.

T.O.

Re: Clunking and tranny whine

I had a motor mount go on my 89, before I found out I would here a clunk , kinda grinding noise , but only when taking off, not when stopping. My engine went up quite a bit more than an inch, but the mount was totally shot where yours if probably on its way, I talking about the engine mount on the drivers side. The bump and clunking noise I had one time on my chev pickup was the result of one of the rear wheels had loose lug nuts and the holes turned into slots, big clunk when ever I put on the brakes. I would also try driving down the road, put in neutral and stop with the e-brake, see if that makes a difference. I also noticed the wining when I first bought it, now a year later I'm used to it, don't really know if all jeeps do it or not.

Re: Clunking and tranny whine

when the my motor mount went completely, I had to replace the whole exhaust system because of the extreme twisting.
