Smile 96 Cavalier Ignition Problem...please help

I recently bought a 96 cavalier, manual trans., 2.2 engine, 140K miles. My problem is, when you turn the key to start it, it does not always turn all the way forward, you have to move it back and forth a bunch of times, and eventually it will turn all the way forward and start. Okay so not good, but then last night I went to start it and the key went all the way forward, the interior lights came on and it turned over like it was going to start, but would not start. It will turn over (I let it go for like 12-15 seconds, a few times) but it will not start, seems like its not getting gas? Can anyone give me some direction? Thanks in advance!
