what size engine do i have?
I picked up an 8cyl on the weekend. Its out of a 1979 Sportsman cube van, 3 speed auto. I was told it was a 318, but while browsing the internet looking for more info on the motor, someone said to look on the front left side of the block and thats where I can find the displacement. Well, the number on the block was this: 4006830-360-9....so, now i dont really know what that means, but if thats the number thats showing my displacement, i dont see a 318 anywhere in there...am i getting my hopes up for nothing here or do i have a 360 and not a 318??
thanx mike |

If you're planning on tearing it apart, just measure the bore. 318 is 3.31", and 360 is 3.58".

Re: what size engine do i have?
as far as i can tell, you have a 360. the casting numbers are more specific than the stamped numbers with chrysler. imagine that. post casting numbers from block and heads

It sounds like you have a 360 - another way to tell is to look at the torque convertor. The 360 is an externally balanced engine, the convertor will have an extra weight welded on it if it's a 360. The front damper is different as well.
Good luck, Gary. |

its definitely a 360 the last 4 casting numbers on the block will tell you this , which in fact, say -360-9 so you have a 360
