humming noise when in 4 wheel drive

hi guys i picked up my 2001 silverado a few weeks ago.at first there was a humming noise not too bad but the serivice 4 wheel drive lite came on.i took it to the dealer and they said it was the solenoid on the transfer case.they fixed the solenoid but it still made the humming noise.then the other day it snows i put it in 4 wheel drive and a few mins later the service 4w/d lite comes back on.it sounds really annoying but the dealer says thats normal,i do not hear this noise in 2w/d.i am dropping it back to them monday afternoon any advice would be great.
thanks paul.

Greetings
I have an '05 Silverado 4x4 and it makes a god awful humming noise in 4x4. Just turn the radio up louder. That's what the dealer told me

Re: humming noise when in 4 wheel drive

I hav a 01 Silverado 4x4 and mine does it too. It used to be worse but then i took it to the dealer to have the front differential oil changed and have it looked at. The dealer said that nothing was wrong with it and some of the noise went away after the oil change but its still annoying.

Lightbulb Re: humming noise when in 4 wheel drive

i have a 2001 silverado extended cab 4x4, it was humming for awhile and then it started vibrating, i checked everything and then on thanksgiving day the transfer case went! the bearings wore out! apparently this is a common problem as i was looking for a used one and they are pretty scarce. I didnt think much of it as my truck has 123,000 on her and aside from the anti lock brake problems i had until i pulled the fuse, it has been a great truck! but just wanted to let you know to check fluid level in the transfer case, as it might prevent you from having to rebuild yours. i rebuilt it myself for less than a$100.00 although i know have the service 4wd light and dont know why!

yeah a lot of people said that they make noise but this osunded horrible, the service manager took it out himself and said right away there was something wrong.it needs a full rebuild he siad when the opened the oil fill plug metal shavings just fell out of there.so it is about 1,600-2,000 dollars to fix it.i am just glad they gave me the extended warranty when i bought it.

Re: humming noise when in 4 wheel drive

As far as the service 4x4 light... Sometimes the push button switch will throw a short and cause the light to come on. You can either replace the switch($50), or take it apart and re-solder the pins. I'd just eat the $50 and buy a new one...

Re: humming noise when in 4 wheel drive

I have a similiar problem in a 01 Tahoe w/ 100k comparing it to my 89 PU w/225k the driverside spider gear is making the noise. Not sure why this is wearing out but this seems to be the issue on mine. Has anyone else had the front rebuilt???

Mines noisy on dry or wet pavement. Off road or in ice and snow its quiet.
