help with 1984 citation

I have a 1984 citation that was very well taken care of. I am having a slight problem with it and I'm not sure what is wrong with it.

The car was dead one day, and my battery was gone. Got a new battery. It would run for a while, then die. I jumped it, the car ran for a little while longer and died again. So I figured it was the alternator. Got a new alternator put in, and the car is still doing the same thing....you jump it for it to start, and it will run for 5 to 10 minutes and then die again. All lights come on, nothing is dim. Not sure what is happening. Please help! This car is my daily runner!!! Thanks!

did you have the alternator and battery tested first? I would go to autozone and have them do a free test of your alternator and battery, if it can make it there of course, and see what happens. if its not an electrical problem, i would look into possibly a bad fuel pump perhaps or something wrong with the carburetor

yes i have....

the alternator is BRAND NEW, and so is the battery. The fuel pump is new, too. It acts like its not getting power to the alt. It will start when jumped...when it stalls, it doesn't try to start, it just clicks like the battery is dead.

Re: help with 1984 citation

because the alternator is new means nothing. using a voltmeter, check the voltage & ensure that it is close to 13.8 volts while running. if it is staying at or near there, how hot is it getting? you haven't said how long it sits between startings..... if it's running & dies, you can't start it right away with its own battery? sounds like it's not charging to me if that's the case - again, voltmeter & check. if it's showing 12v or less while running, your alternator is NOT working or you have a major short somewhere (not likely though). an easy check to ensure alternator is working if you don't have a voltmeter, start the car, & carefully remove one battery cable. if the car dies, the alternator isn't working, hooked up wrong, whatever - but it's not putting out any power.
