swaping out 4.3 vortec motor

I got a 1994 s10 blazer with a 4.3L vortec which my brother failed to maintain the oil and wiped the motor out. So, my dad picked up a newer 4.3 liter vortec from a totaled truck that i believe was a 2000 but i am not sure. The complete motor itself will not work in the 1994, so i was thinking that if i strip it to just the block and heads and then swap the old intake manifold back on the newer motor it should work. My only concern is did GM design these heads differently to where i will not be able to match the 1994 manifold with them and will the 94 computer be compatible with this?
Thanks Joe

Re: swaping out 4.3 vortec motor

Welcome to Automotive Forum Joe

Well I just did a Google search, and it looks like your in luck with the manifold.

And I really can't see the block and heads being all that different.

It's probably a good time to change the cam to the grind that best suits your driving style.

It should be a good little truck when your done.

If the parts truck was hit hard in the front pull the oil pan off and make sure that the crank shaft is still in 1 piece before you drop the motor in.

Re: swaping out 4.3 vortec motor

Heads from 96 and newer will not work with your 94 intake manifold. You could use the heads from your 94 on the newer block, but the 94 knock sensor and ECM are not able to provide proper knock detection to prevent damage to the newer style pistons and rings.
Use a new set of Torque To Yeild head bolts and use "torque plus angle" head bolt Torque specs for a 2000 year. This is a more exact spec and is needed in the newer blocks to minimize cylinder wall distortion due to head-bolt torque.
Your better bet would be to get ECM and all sensors from the 2000.
You really need to find a 1994 or older (or early1995 with OBD1) engine to use.

Re: swaping out 4.3 vortec motor

Thanks guys, that sucks that i cant use those heads. Do u think i should take the 94 heads to a machine shop to overhaul them and then bolt them right to the 2000 block. And what about the cam, do they both have the same one?

Look into it more. Like I said to me it looks like the Vortec motors all use the same intake manifold.

I was looking at edelbrock's web site
www.edelbrock.com

The none vortec motor lists different numbers for different years.

Re: swaping out 4.3 vortec motor

Sorry about that, I just looked at edelbrock's web page again, and I see that the manifold that I was looking at is for all v6 Vortec's, but with carburators.

My mistake.

Although it sounded like quik0781 was willing to use the 94 intake manifold to me
