You know the Mclaren F1's 'spoiler'.....

.....does anyone have any pics of the spoiler in use - ie not in its normal down position - on the back of the F1? (the bit above and behind the exhaust silencers that both deflects the hot air from the engine (and brakes?) and deflects the airflow from the top of the car to aide it in slowing down)

Many thanks

There are a few more pics of the wing up while it's leaving Crystal Cove. There's a thread with more pics. Notice the gold reflecting off of it in the first and last pic

The 'spolier's technical name is "Brake Balance Foil" as I recall. It has three positions - flush, halfway up, and all the way up as seen in those three screenshots of the Yellow F1. Halfway up is somewhere in the 30˚ range and all the way up is really more like 50˚ or so. The air brake on the SLR seems to go almost vertical in comparison.

There is a knob on the pod to the left of the steering wheel in the F1 that allows the driver to manually adjust the angle of the foil between the three positions. When the knob is left in the flush position the foil will pop up automatically under braking.

I got to see one in action first hand the night I saw Elon Musk's F1 on the road. I was following his car towards the freeway and when he braked to make the 90-degree right onto the freeway onramp the foil popped up for just a few seconds, exposing it's golden underside. I have to say without a doubt it is one of the coolest things I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing while driving.

There's an excellent photo of the foil in its full-up position in Driving Ambition. I think I have it scanned and will share it here later.

As promised - the shot from Driving Ambition...

...and of course it is clickable for something a little better.

If you don't own "The Bible" (as it is referred to at times) and you're reading this thread, you really owe it to yourself to get a copy. Christmas is coming - put it at the top of your wishlists.

Got a shot of the knob on the dash that controls the spoiler?

Thanks!

I'm sorry, but no photos exist of the knob on the dash that controls the spoiler. It's a tragedy of epic porportions, I know...

WTF? My only copy from 1999 still resides beside my other F1 publications, road tests, literature, etc. Albeit, devoid of it's pull-out which is professionally mounted and framed to celebrate the F1's GLORIOUS chassis history!

There's five at my house, however one copy isn't mine. You can never have too much of a good thing.

One torn and tattered original, one sealed original, one new copy to replace the tattered copy, one new copy with the spine torn that will be great for scanning (someday).

I also bought an additional copy of the poster to get framed before I got the last two copies of the book, but I've been slacking on that.
