Re: 100 octane....Whats the big deal?/

The higher the octane, the less likely the fuel is to ignite prematurely causing knock. In simplest terms, higher octane fuel burns slower to reduce the chance of pre-ignition. 100 octane would be a waste if your car isn't highly modded. It is a common misconception that high octane fuels have more/better detergents and run cleaner, which just isn't true. For both performance and economy, you are best off using the lowest octane you can while avoiding knock and subsequently knock retard of the timing. Since most people don't have access to scan tools and computer programs like Autotap, that monitor these parameters in real time, you are best to stick with the owners manual recommended octane. This assumes that you haven't modded your car, which may require higher octane due to the mods.

100 octane? What's the cost per gallon? Sounds like sport bike heaven.

Re: 100 octane....Whats the big deal?/

In Strongsville ohio, not that i would know or anything "wink-wink" but for the 114 sunoco cam 2 its about 4.50 a gal. i added 2 gal to 8 gal of 94 oct. i do this once or twice a year to burn off any carbons that may have built up. My car leans it out a little to get a little white smore but after a while it goes away. Now...i dont think it gives you any more hp..but i never got my car on a dyno to conferm that. I beleve you can run up to 100oct safeley before you start blowing your o2 sencers and a few other things. bnaylor3400-do you agree?

I wish I had that grade of gas here. I could use it in my Honda CR250 MX bike. I have to use 99 octane or better in it. Right now I use VP Racing fuel C10 unleaded which is 108 octane. Stuff is expensive at $5.50 per gallon with a mininum purchase of 5 gallons.

When I take the GTP out to the dragstrip I use the VP C10 also. Haven't had any problems with the 02 sensors, yet. My rear 02 sensor after the CAT is a 02 simulator.

It's racing fuel made by a company called VP racing. The C10 unleaded is 108 octane but they have different grades and octane depending on your mods, etc. Plus you can safely blend the stuff with pump gas premium. I use it to help control any possible knock retard. When KR is detected by the PCM it retards the ignition timing and will degrade performance. Doesn't help getting good 1/4 mile times. At the dragstrip I don't take any chances. The supercharger gets pretty hot after a few runs. Every little bit counts.

In high performance or racing applications, high octane fuel will help..if you are using your vehicle for everyday driving, use only the octane that is recommended.
Here is a link that will explain about gasoline...good read

Nice read GMMerlin. Did you get that VAMC (Andrew)? Putting higher grades of fuel in your stock Alero won't help.
