possible starter problem

Got into car a couple hours after going to the store and the car would not start. Had plenty of power, everything electric work, but no noise when the key turns.
Should I replace the starter? Would the starter just go out like that or are we overlooking something simple? Many Thanks in advance.

Gear selector is in. Tried jiggling it and that did not work. Lights do not flicker but I don't have a volt meter. Clicks somethime then stopped but not even close to everytime I tried. Can hear the fuel pump and dash boards lights seem fine.
11/3 - Changed the starter and no luck(expensive mistake). Is there some sort of fuel cut off switch some where? Or is their a way I can check the ignition switch without taking it to the shop?

Regards,
