i do NOT believe this!!!! (warning: expletives inside)
today is my last day at the furniture store i work at. but this still REALLY pissed me off.
i found out how much my manager (who does MAYBE 1/2 of the work that i do) makes per pay period. since i started working here in april my manager has made me pretty much do all of his job so he can sit in the back office and check stuff out on ebay. my manager is paid salary and takes breaks and leaves whenever he wants to go "get coffee" and is gone for hours at a time and his most recent paycheck (for the two week long pay period) is about $1025 (after taxes). honestly, i think that that is complete and utter bullshit. i get paid $9/hr and i work my ass off 36 hours a week and my paycheck (after taxes) is between $400 and $450 per two week pay period. a little under two months ago the girl i work with (who quit last week) and i made it clear to the owners of my store (a married couple) what had been going on. most importantly, that we had been doing most of HIS work, that he was consistently rude to us and customers, and that he would just leave for hours at a time (and he doesnt have a cell phone we could reach him on). they said "well we knew he wasnt doing his job but we didnt know it was that bad." WELL WTF!!!! if they knew he wasnt doing his job, why would they continue to pay me crap and give him $1000 paychecks!?!!?? i made it abundantly clear to both owners (said married couple) that i was not making enough money, barely scraping by from paycheck to paycheck. and HOW could they NOT feel guilty about it???? i asked for a raise or commission and they said that the store is not making enough money to give me a raise or commission because they are still in the first year of business, which is understandable to a point. OKAY, YEAH. but you're paying your lazy manager a decent amount of money while the two employees who are making the business as profitable as it is are working their asses off and get paid shit?? oh, not to mention that the owners just bought a $1.5 million house down on the coastal trail (apparently it's choice property here in anchorage, alaska) and drive a $38k+ lexus RX!!! i'm sorry but this is just a little on the fucked up side to me. i guess that i should mention that said owners also own a local weekly newspaper that's been around for about 12 or 13 years and the only way they make their money is from advertising because the paper is free. and it's an extremely popular paper so that's where they get their money for the house and car, i am guessing. am i overreacting or do i really have a legitimate reason to be bitching about this?? AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Re: i do NOT believe this!!!! (warning: expletives inside)
smoke a ounce, drink a case of beer and you'll feel better
that sucks that they were not even willing to give you a raise or anything, even a kick in the stomach! until this job that I currently have, all other jobsthat I had raises depending on performance. You have to bust your ass for 6 months to get a LOSY FUCKING $.25 raise. And that was the most they gave at any one time to any employee. To answer your question, yes, you have a reason to bitch

2.2 straight six, i DID do something about it. i got another job and only gave them a weeks notice. maybe i should have given two weeks notice, but i really cant afford to deal with this crap anymore. trust me, they know i'm serious. but i think that they know they can hire someone else who they can pay less that doesnt know any better. that's not me. i know what i'm worth and i know what i deserve. and it's not this!!! if you've seen the other threads about jobs/job searches, you'll see that i've gotten another job and i start monday. it's paying $12/hr so i'm REALLY excited about that. still, this crap here at the furniture store pisses me off.

Re: i do NOT believe this!!!! (warning: expletives inside)
You have a reason to complain, yes maybe. But you're definately not seeing this problem from the business owners perspective. They have:
-A new business, which isn't completely in the black yet -Human Resource Issues - staff turnover just increased with you leaving, and they know the manager isn't doing his job. What are their options? Get rid of the manager, and watch you walk out the door and then be 2 staff members down instead of one? I would try and deal with one problem at a time. Either try to reform/train the current manager and worry about the $9/h floor staff job later - because there is a million high school/college age kids who can fill the $9/h position adequately and learn your tasks - whereas finding someone to be a full time manager for average pay that actually DOES A GOOD JOB will prove much more difficult. Their personal finances and other business dealings are just that - private. You have made some massive assumptoins and leaps with your above inferences - the money to finance that property could be from either of their salaries, a financial restructure, a death in the family - who knows? Not me and not you because that is private business!

Re: i do NOT believe this!!!! (warning: expletives inside)
Since you already quit, this particular case no longer matters. For others who may be in this position I would like to offer some advice.
The fact that the owners can afford expensive homes and cars is a good thing. If they aren't making money then for sure their employees won't be. You WANT your company to be making big $$. When they hired Mr. Manager and offered him good pay, they obviously seen something in him. My guess is it was his past performance record in similar positions, which is something you probably don't have yet. Instead of trying to tell the owners that the manager they chose (who is now showing a profit) is a big loaf, you should be demonstrating how you could be a better manager. Work closely with the present manager, learning everything you can, doing as much of his job as possible. Do it better than he can. In a small company it is impossible for this to go unnoticed for long. This is when they will give you his job and the $$$ you have earned. I know this from experience because it happened to me when I was only 19-20. After proving myself, I was the one deciding who gets hired/fired/promoted, and how much of an increase my people received. In the big corporations I've been in since then things are different, but that's a whole nother story. But you still need to make your boss look good if you expect to go anywhere.

He's your superior. He's probably already been where you were and has moved up. A manager's responsiblity is to do just that, manage. He might not be doing work that your doing, but I guarantee he's doing work you don't see him doing.
My friend is a superintendant of construction. He's paid a lot more money than the people that shovel and pour concrete. He occasionally helps out with that sort of work, but only because he doesn't want to be the biggest dickhead of a boss. Bust most of the time, he's measuring, ordering, and making sure all is well on the job site. He chose to bust his ass in college so he can do what he's doing. The others didn't. Therefore you see the importance of either knowing people or getting an education.

I'd have made a case for having the manager's job, since he's not doing it and you have been for some time....

Just take comfort in the fact that $2050/month is a really crappy salary for a grown man

Depends on where you live, as to whether 26K is a lot or not. But I'd agree, if I had been making that much straight out of college, I'd have been happy about it!

I would assume $26k in Anchorage, Alaska is different than $26k in California or New York. I make about that and I get by decently enough (I live in NH.)
