Backfire - Good/Bad?

I have a stock S14 SR20DET (Zenki) in my car with a testpipe, hks hi-power exhaust, intake, and greddy downpipe. My car backfires every time i change gears. I just wanted to know if that is normal and if it is good or bad. Cuz i've heard that it's not bad from some people, and then i hear that it can mess up the turbo from others. So i don't know what to do. I just want to get this cleared up, and fix it if i have to. My spark plugs are also gapped at 28 if that makes a difference. Thanks for the help.

if your blow off valve vented to atmosphere? if it is, that is the reason why your backfiring. also backfiring maybe cool at first but it is not good. it basically means that your just dumping fuel into the tailpipe. it probrably bogs alittle too after you change gears too right?

Re: Backfire - Good/Bad?

u have no cat and ur BOV is set too loose, what i mean by that, is when i set my spring lode on the BOV to loose (open for a long time) my car back fired like crazy. when i tighten it, problem solved.

back fire is ok , but with the price of gas... i don't know man!

Uhh... Either that or its a turbo car with a Testpipe...

Tighten your blow off valve, if it doesnt help - dont worry about it.

Re: Backfire - Good/Bad?

If you are idling good, then the BOV is set just fine. Backfires are normal.

I'm running the stock BOV right now. It doesnt bog though when i change gears. As long as it's normal, than i'm not worried. Just wanted to make sure it doesnt damage anything or needs to be corrected. Thanks a lot guys

Re: Backfire - Good/Bad?

As long as you cant see flames in your rearveiw mirror its all good. Once you get into that territory you'll have bore wash, but you'll be fine with the stock BOV.

Re: Backfire - Good/Bad?

backfires are common with modified cars. get used to it.

if you don't want them, take a brick and shove it in your exhaust.

Re: Backfire - Good/Bad?

I love backfires with flames.

My old SR20DET did one driving through a neighborhood. A very dark street, just cruising at about 25mph I down shifted to 2nd to slow to a stop and my whole rearview mirror was lit up in blue flame and the area immediately behind the car was all lit up.

Coolest thing I'd ever seen... and I wasn't even on it. Never could get it to do it again though, which depressed me.

Flames = Badass

Shooting fireballs is one of the main reasons I went turbocharged. I just love watching them, or hearing them.

I need another turbo car.
