firewall?

wassup everyone... i posted this question in the Interior/Audio/Security section and a couple of my questions didnt get answered so i thought i'd bring this topic here... here's the situation:

i bought a while ago a knight rider light (dont laugh... its my car) and ive been meaning to install it... i was gonna have it installed the same time i get my system hooked up... but they way it looks... the system ain't coming for a while... so i decided to do it myself... in the I/A/S forum crxlvr suggest to roll back the passenger side carpet so i can get to the firewall... and i did that, but there was nothing under the carpet... so i looked around that area and i found this:

u see where there is a large bundle of wires going into a grommet (i guess thats what u call it), does that lead to the engine bay??? i looked under the hood to see where it would come out and i think it comes out right behind the battery... i didnt wanna cut into the grommet and it doesnt go where i need it to...

i was also advised that i should just tap into a 12v source in the in-cabin fuses... say the parking lights... my question is... do i have to?? i was looking at the owners manual (not the greatest source of information... but it was helpful in this case... i cant wait to get my helms manual) and it says that there are unused fuses... i was thinking y not tap into there??? would that work??? what size fuse should i get if im able to do that??? im guessin 10A since the 'accessory socket' is 12v and it said it has a 10A fuse...

ok... if tapping the unused fuse is ill-advised... what should i tap into??? im just a lil worried that i'll get an electrical problem like i turn on my headlights and my doors unlock...

and finally... where is the nearest ground on the passenger side??? one of the wires on the control box needs to be grounded...

i just wanted to thank everyone ahead of time for their input... ive been meanin to do this for a while... i actually bought this before i bought my type-R grill... i bought the grill to accomodate the light.. LOL... so i really wanna do this... i think it would look pretty hot... i can control the speed of the lights flashin back and forth... and u can definitly see it... the light spans the whole grill... LOL... thanks again... i'll post pics when im done... i'll also take pics step by step if any one else wants to do this too...

Damn you are WAY too analytical about this. You can run it off the battery but that's alot just for that little thing. Besides there are many other holes along the firewall you could use.

I suggest you run it off an unused fuse. The little door that covers it should label which is safe to use. Watch out cause some lose power when the car is turned off, just in case you don't want that. And a 10 amp fuse should be fine. Just put in power to the fuse and as for ground, I suggest you get a cheap voltmeter or borrow one if your gonna be doing stuff like this. You use the volt meter to find your own suitable ground or just look for any screw that's eletrically connected to the chasis. There should be ALOT in thet general area. Or just drill a hole in the chasis whereever you want and use a screw to hold the wire in, whatever.

Just positive and negative and a switch bro, nothing to it.

yeah... i am over analytical about it... but thats what higher-education has done to me... besides... i just want to eliminate all the variables so i can just forget it once its done...

where else can i access the firewall?? i have no idea about these things... except guessin at the obvious... i was wondering if the grommet i showed in the pic does lead into the engine bay... the wire that connects the light to the control box is flat but wide... its about i say 1-1.5 in wide since one wire controls each bulb... so i was plannin to put the light in the upper front grill... run the wire around the engine bay avoiding anything hot or movin on the passenger side of the engine bay... into that grommet into the cabin where i can connect it to the box... i am set that i will just tap into an unused fuse... and i have a voltmeter sumwhere in the toolbox so i can find a suitable ground... so access throught the firewall is the only major variable left...

damn... there i go being overly analytical again... LOL

Thats what higher education has done to him -- but he still uses the damn "..." everywhere :finger:

Is it REALLY that hard to find something in the firewall? Pop your hood open... see all the rubber gromets? Find one with wires going through it. Poke a little hole, grab your power wire, tire it to the end of a coat hanger and fish it through bro! NEVER work from the cabin into the bay, ALWAYS work from the engine bay into the cabin.

10A will be fine... blah blah blah I think everything else has been answered :smoka:

Run one wire to the battery and the other to ground. On the passenger side, I used one that holds my glove compartment on. Get a switch too, and mount it in the center console or wherever else you want. That way you can turn the lights on/off whenever you want.

Unbend a coat hanger, tape your wire onto it. Look to the right of your battery, and you'll see a black grommet. Take that off, and shove the hanger down there. You'll see if go inside the cabin.
