Question 92 Jetta cv? bearing? noise

My 92 Jetta GL makes a noise when I'm driving straight or turning right. It gets louder (almost unbearable on the freeway) when I drive faster. When I am turning left the noise goes away. I am thinking the problem is either the wheel bearing or the CV axle. Any suggestions?

Is it a kind of knocking? I get a knocking and the dealership says it is the CV joint.

The noise is a constant hum, its not knocking, clicking, ratcheting, or anything like that so it makes me think its not the cv joint. The car vibrates a bit too. I think its the wheel bearing but I'm not sure.

Wheel Bearing Noise

I have had both front bearings done. Your noise sounds like a wheel bearing. Loud humming vibration that can change with steering movement. Consistent whoom, whoom, whoom, and gets louder with speed and vibration in the steering wheel. Get it replaced soon because the more wear can not only do in the bearing completely, but surrounding parts as well, which, will just increase cost. These are somewhat difficult to do on your own as the bearing is pressed and bolted in pretty good. Probably around $250.00 parts and labor at a shop.

It was the wheel bearing. I had both front wheel bearings replaced at $76.00 a piece and both front hubs at $86.00 each. Labor was $90.00 for each side. Total work done cost $364.55 with tax. The car now drives smooth and quietly. Niiiice.

What about a a rubbing or whoom whoom that is proportional to speed. I hear it inside and out. In both cases it sounds like its coming from the rear drivers wheel. Jacked it up. Back psgr wheel rotates with no sound. Back dvr wheel rotated with low rubbing sound. Seems like its transmitting through the body when driving. As I get up to highway speed, its harder to hear. Doesn't go away when breaking, so I'm think a rear wheel bearing?

Any thoughts?

It sounds to me like it is your rear wheel bearings. You could save money by purchasing the parts on-line and installing them yourself. The Bently manual has excellent instruction on how to do this. However, a professional mechanic is a better option if you can afford it.
