1990 tsi awd vs jetta 1.8T

Hey, sorry if this is in the wrong area or something. Anyway there is a kid in my school who wants to race. He has a vw jetta 1.8T that has a turbo back exhaust, eci (ecu mod supposed to give 30+ hp), intake, bov, and a "$5,000" turbo set at 22psi. I have no idea what the hell a $5,000 turbo is, probably a lie. I have a 1990 tsi awd with a 3inch catback, k&n filter, hacked maf, tubular headers, lightweight pulleys, act2600, and fidanza flywheel. In the next couple of weeks I'm getting a 3 inch downpipe, an 02 housing with an atmospheric dump, and a working mbc. If we were to race now I would get spanked right? Also after I get the d-pipe, 02 housing, and mbc would I be able to take him. Also do you guys think he's just full of shit or that thing actually moves. I have no idea what vw's can do so please post your advice.

Racing on a real track, don't tell me not to street race I'm close enough to a track so I don't have to bother.

Re: 1990 tsi awd vs jetta 1.8T

i am sure you would win. check to see what he has for managment other than the chip, if all he has is a chip i doubt a 5k turbo will do him any good without the proper tunning.

Re: 1990 tsi awd vs jetta 1.8T

Ask what kind of turbo he has. I am betting on the Jetta. They are light weight and are pretty fast. My friend's 1.8T Golf spanks a lot of cars around here and he has minimal mods on it. Race and see. Dont Forget to post RESULTS !!! I wanna see who won

I don't know of a turbo that costs $5k. I'm sure they exist, but the chances of him getting his hands on one are slim.

Those jetta's are no slouch. I don't see why many people think that because its a VW it is slow as hell. My friend used to own one, and that thing could haul some ass compared to a lot of cars I had been in. He's lying about his setup, tell him to pop the hood and take a look for yourself.....

I give you about an 80% chance of winning, because your AWD.

Ok, I'll see if he lets me check it out. Its not like we're racing for money or anything so I don't see why not. If he really is running 22psi on some huge ass turbo I'm going to get killed right? Also is it worth trying now or should I wait for the mbc and exhaust?

Re: 1990 tsi awd vs jetta 1.8T

Just because he has a huge ass turbo doesn't mean an automatic win. Does he have the supporting mods to back it up? Race him, what do you have to lose? Pride?

A good driver also counts for alot. Practice your launches before you get to the track

Ask him if he has done any suspension work of any sort because from what I've heard any OEM VW axles, springs, shocks, and etc. can't handle too much horsepower so if he hasn't replaced any of those then he's probably b.s-ing you

P.S. I raced one right after the Evo III install from a 40mph roll and got him by about 5 cars. He had no exhaust just a downpipe, upgraded turbo(not sure what type) and a front mount.

Re: 1990 tsi awd vs jetta 1.8T

yeah im in that same situation but the guy that want to race me is in a TT. Its all stock but he thinks that he will take me.. But he does have a 20 valve. I got some work done to my car and now the turbo starts to spool up at 3k instead of 4. Poor guy doesn't know whats going to happen to him... Good luck. Yaaa I can now run 14 psi instead of 12

Re: 1990 tsi awd vs jetta 1.8T

If it's a regular four door Jetta 1.8 you'll blow the doors off of him. They are slower than the stock 3g GT eclipse. I know because I raced one back when I had my 3g. You should be good.

Well, the race didn't go quite as I hoped it would. I had him from the launch up to about 55-60mph, there he came back and got a nose on me. Oh well, he's spent like 8k "just on the engine" so its cool with me. Now once I get the mbc, fuel pump, o2 housing, and downpipe it should be a different story.
