1995 Astro Van alternator problem

HELP! My 1995 Astro Van's alternator went out the other day. I have replaced it and still having problems. The first one I put did not work, so I thought the new alternator was bad and replaced it with a second one. the second one did not work either. I had it tested and Auto Zone and Kragens - they both said it was good. When I put it on my van, the voltage meter shows 9 volts. If you pull the battery cable off the battery, the engine immediately goes dead. the battery is good - it is a deep cell marine battery - that is new. I need help - I can't figure out why the alternator is not working. Thanks in advance.

It is very possible that the fusible link powering the alternator died when the alternator died. This link is what connects the alternator to the electrical system. Check the following: using a test light connected to ground, check all of the red wires on the alternator. They should all have voltage on them. If not, the link is mounted on the starter, and will require replacement. Ray

Re: 1995 Astro Van alternator problem

I, too, have the EXACT same problem with a '95 Astro Van.

My van has one BRN wire (signal) electrical connector [[ that SHOWS DIM when I hit it with a 12V test light ]].

And the larger gauge BATtery wire connected to it (and it IS ON Bright or showing the right voltage).

I pride myself in my electrical skills, but this one still has me scratching my head. I even tried bypassing the BRN wire connection from the car and shooting 12vdc directly to the alternator from the BAT and this thing still wont charge!

Help!
