skyline worth it ?

hello all, currently i drive a 1989 mr2 turbo with hks super dragger exhaust and a apxi intake, that is about all that was done to it, I have found a skyline r32 gts-t i wanted to know if i would be getting a deal on that car for 2500 and if it performs better then my mr2, I have looked on line to try to find the engine type in the gts-t and have found that it either has the rb20det or the rb25det cant figure out witch, any ways should i stick with my mr2 or go for this deal, also I have not talked to owner yet ( i think he is out of town, i just saw car with for sale sign ) however in the car there is a switch that has a red cover on it ( the kind of cover that when fliped down turns the switch of and makes it hard to turn it on by mistake ) that says 180 + any clues what that might be ?? i was thinking a nitrus swithc but 180 + seems a bit high for nitrus, however the car is speed limited to 180 kph so could it be a switch to remove the speed limiter ????

thanks for any help / info

Re: skyline worth it ?

The R32 GTST will have the RB20DET.

The switch could be a nitrous switch but I feel that would be unlikely. It may be switch for a boost controller (high/low boost) ar as you say may be wired into the computer to remove the factory 180kph speed limiter.

where are you based?

I would choose the R32 over the MR2 but then again I am biased, never have liked the MR2

the MR2 is a great car with its engine in the middle its great. if I were you I would keep the MR2 and buy the R32 as a weekend car ^^

The switch...no one would know until you ask the owner of the car. It might be Nitrous, boost, or just a switch for lights. who knows.

I wonder this myself. Maybe in Japan or Canada it would be a respectable choice, but I only know one person who had a Skyline IRL, and besides it's sex appeal, it really didn't impress anyone.

The person I knew owned a card shop. He was making okay money, but his wife was raking in the cash. He sold his late father's vette and managed to import a Skyline R33 GTR a month or two later. I never knew the year and I don't even know when the R34 came out, but I'm sure it's a R33 and I think it was a '96 spec. To get to the point, it was obviously badass to know someone with a skyline, but that car really couldn't hold it's own against much more than a 350Z, S2k or Mustang GT. He ended up haveing some sort of problem where he couldn't end up getting enough oil in the crak or whatever crazy story he came up with and the engine blew on him, but I just remeber a few weeks prior when we were in his $30-40k+ imported Skyline seeing a LS1 Trans Am pull out of the local car deal and merge into traffic ahead of us. They met up at the next stoplight and it was sort of sad. This Trans am was obviously stock and was being driven by what looked to be a car salesman. He blew the doors off of the GTR.

Anyway, I guess the way people build up these cars just makes it hurt more when they lose. I guess the the top model R34 would be no more than in the mid to low 13 second 1/4 mile range? I just can't see him beating a US spec Impreza STi or EVO.

Btw, the only mod done to the Skyline was a full exhaust from the downpipe back. It was custom made, since the card shop owner was pretty good with exhaust work. That was the only mod done to the vette his father owned, as well.

The point I tried but probably failed to make is if you get past the initial 'omg skyline' part, it really is just a sporty car, with a plain interior, and okay performance stock. I would get rid of the MR2 and go for the best deal you can get wherever you live, whether it be mustang or WRX. But I just don't really think a Skyline is all that much of a choice if you live in a place where you need it imported. If you live in Japan or Europe, then that's a different story.
With all that aside, I'd trade my left nut for an R34 GTR. I really don't need two of them.

EDIT: Yeah, he ended up selling the car 'as is' to some young guy after the engine blew, never to see it again. He drives a VW Passat now.:/

Re: skyline worth it ?

The car had an RB26?

A stock LS1 is a pretty fast car, but it should have not blown the doors off of a GTR. My GTR with just a boost controller and intake filter mods will break into the 12s. Stock, your looking mid-high 13s.

In street trim, the GTR should have taken the LS1 if the GTR was heathy. There are a lot of minor thing that can affect a cars perfomance. Plus if the LS1 only had one passanger, that helps as well.

Re: skyline worth it ?

Might I add, the GTR was never meant for straight line perfomance. In a road race, the LS1 or most cars will be eaten up by a GTR. Infact I watched a show here a few months ago where an R33 GTR(which is the worst of the GTRs for handling) killed an BMW M3, Ferrari 355, Porcshe 911, WRX STi, Supra, and some other cars I can not recall.

R32 GTRs are the bomb! I own 3, and I would never buy anything else. With that being said, I would still keep your MR2.

Re: skyline worth it ?

I own 4 R32s, they are the best of all the Skylines.

It was a Clarkson video that was on the TV here in the UK.

I should add, the race was not even close, the GTR destoyed all of them. They used 3 pro drives, in all the cars. They could take the cars out as long as they wanted to get the best times in each car.
