Blown headgasket I dont think so!

Today I kid wanted to take my car to a shop to see if everything is ok with it because he might want to buy it. So when we get there the guy tells me my head gasket was blown and I was like did you do a compression test and hes like no. So he shows me so oil around where the head gasket is now this tells me nothing I say well if the head gasket was blown then the compression test would tell and the car would drive like shit. He told me that a compression test would not always tell. I call this bullshit. What are your thoughts and what could this oil be I think its just a mess from some maintence in the past.

A very small trace of oil is nothing to worry about. But if it's pretty significant where oil is leaking on the floor or over other parts of your engine then yeah maybe. From what I've learned theres only a few shops that won't shit on dsm's but most usually give you crappy advice. Have you ever changed the head gasket before?

Well if the headgasket is leaking to the point where there's oil running down the block, a compression test would be able to tell you a lot. This guy wants the job because it pays 9-10 flat rate hours and there's a few tricks you can to do get it done pretty quick, he probably just wants your money man.

Well change head gasket and sell it . Head gasket is no big deal really. Well depends, I changed mine on the RS since I drove it kinda hard. Ask a mechanic how much would they charge to to change the head gasket. You can buy head gaskets from any place and its fairly cheap but labor is what might hurt you. Check with a mechanic.

I own a 1966 mustang no time to be changing head gasket. The gave me an estmate of 650 parts and labor.

650 parts and labor isn't too bad depending on which gasket they're gonna use. Don't use the stocker. If it is blow, go with ARP studs.

I doubt it's blown though, check your coolant for oil and your oil for coolang, any overheating?

Re: Blown headgasket I dont think so!

The car has responded just the same as always no problems like always no overheating missing or smoke which are common with headgasket. But I have lost oil tommrow I am taking it in to see if they can find the real root of the leak. I would do it myself but damn its tight down there.

Re: Blown headgasket I dont think so!

It could just be leaking around the valve cover and dripping down the head honestly. Let us know though.

Wouldn't any sort of "V" engine(v6,v8) be easy to change out the head gasket because you don't have to deal with timing?

Re: Blown headgasket I dont think so!

A HG can leak oil and still pass a compression test. Consider this. The HG seperates the oil sytem, coolant system, combustion chamber, and atmosphere. Leaks can occur between any two of those points. It's entirely possible to have an oil passage find a leak to atmosphere (the side of the head/block where you would "see" the leak), but still have a good seal at the combustion chambers. But, that being said, I have never seen this happen on the turbo motors (oil leak that you can see). The NTs were famous for it in the early years, but never seen it with the turbo motors. Shit, just realized this may be an NT model in question. If, it's actually quite likely. Since it does not affect compression and performance, and its a slow leak, most poeple just leave it.

Re: Blown headgasket I dont think so!

yeah but it's a 99 n/t...not the earlier ones like you said. if i was you i would clean the oil off
and drive it for a week or 2 and then see if you can see if it still leaks...if the leak comes back from the same spot (from head/block mating surface) and drips down, then your head gasket is most likely bad. if there is oil from above the block/head mating surface and it leaks down to where you cleaned the oil before, then it's not the head gasket, you're leaking somewhere else.

also where is the leak at? do you ever spill or drip any oil onto the valve cover when you fill it up with oil? i'd still clean up where it's suspicious and drive it, check out the leak, and go from there.

Re: Blown headgasket I dont think so!

You could also buy some oil dye and a light to help trace the source of the leak. Any shop will also be able to do this for you.
