What Ohms are my factory speakers(96 4drLS)

I have to get some bass blockers or a cross-over. But I figure might as well get new door speakers. Cause they sounded better with factory deck. with the new JVC deck they really sound terrible. Was wondering if there was an issue with that?

Girlbear , staying up all night? me too , working though. In my experience factory speakers range from 6 to 10 ohms depending on make , model and speaker size . Polarity of the wires is difficult to figure out .You probably already know what the aftermarket ones are since they are all 4 ohm for automotive . Your factory unit will sound louder because factory radios are designed for the higher resistance Although they are not rated on output wattage , most factory radios are more powerfull than most aftermarket units . Its the fancy bells and whistles the aftermarket units hook us with . Rob

Yup you are right 6-10 ohms, that is why they sound terrible. The impedance is thrown off. Only my suggestion but if you replace your door speakers I would go with Polk. I have them and I love them. I just got a new deck and they play so much louder then the other aftermarket deck I had. Oh and I don't agree with a factory stereo being more powerful then an aftermarket one, I don't think that is correct. I could be wrong though!

It would be a good idea to replace the wiring at the same time as the speakers.

Think it will make that much of a difference? I have a cousin who works for Circuit City I bet I could get it done for free!

Re: What Ohms are my factory speakers(96 4drLS)

That's what I've always heard. If you upgrade your deck and speakers, why not the wiring? I believe the stock wiring is 20 awg. If you put a more powerful (than stock) deck and better speakers in, then the stock wiring is "holding back" your sound. I replaced my wiring with 14 awg (twice as thick as 20) and have noticed the difference.

Well I thank you all for your help. I also had another question tho. When I happen upon a rough road I cringe. do to my sub box bounces all over the back of the truck. My question is, is it safe to drill holes in the floor back there to mount a couple of straps to secure the box?

Why not use the tie downs that are already there?

Re: What Ohms are my factory speakers(96 4drLS)

I only meant that factory units have more power because they have to push a more resistive factory speaker . But not that they have more power for volume or clarity . I have a 500 watt Monsoon system in my TA and it is driving 10 ohm factory speakers , If I replace them with 4 ohm speakers , the effective power would be around 1200 watts by power to resistance ratio. But that is just an estimate. That is the only reason I said they are more powerful , because they have to work harder with factory speakers . Rob

Girlbear , look under before you drill thru . Don't let you bit go too far thru since you have a fuel tank under the middle. Your fuel and brake lines are away from the floor and your electrical wires are in the door jambs . Are you going to use L brackets? Rob

Girlbear, you can get a stealthbox from JL Audio for your truck... Sounds damn good... Comes with a W1-V2 woofer. Good space saver and isn't ugly like a box..

Here's mine

Stock wiring is 16-18 gauge, should be fine.

If you decide to drill use a good amount of silicone caulk in the hole and arouond the bolts to avoid rust.

Re: What Ohms are my factory speakers(96 4drLS)

Well, out of personal experience that JVC radio probably won't last the winter. I use to be a JVC supporter. I bought everything JVC TV, VCR, DVD Player an CD player, but after having the 52" TV serviced 6X in 2yrs, VCR dying after 3 months of use, DVD player 1YR, Stereo 6 months. My brother bought a JVC DVD player lasted him 4 months. My sister had a JVC stereo lasted her 4 months. I have concluded after careful testing JVC is pure junk!! You ask why? Well, JVC use to be among the best in the early 90's, but with inflation and fierce competition their way of staying competitive yet affordable with the competition was to make an inferior entry level radio that can be purchased in just about any retail store. One more thing do you folks remember Jensen?
