Engine swapping question

im eventually going to be replacing the engine in my car, now as to how soon that happens im not sure, but my car is a 96 2.2 L manual cavalier, now is it possible for me to put in a 2.4L engine into it, and what would be the advantages disadvantages of doing this?

Re: Engine swapping question

the 2.4l engine that came in the cavs? if so then then it should be / most likely be a direct swap, you will have a lil bit more displacment and a lil bit more hp stock.

advantages, a lil bit more hp in stock form

disadvantages, well the engine costs quite abit for that lil bit of hp and .2 liters more.

im guessing thats right, i could be a lil bit wrong.

wrong..the 2.4 is NOT a direct swap into a 2.2 stock cav...your going to need wiring harness' ,motor mounts ,ECU
your best bet is to buy a recked Z24 and rip the guts out and replace it exactly how you found it in the reck into your car....OR sell your car and buy a Z24 all together...those are the 2 cheapest ways

and the disadvantages of it costing more cuz its .2L more? ,,,that doesnt even make sense..it has nothing to do with how many more litres it is that makes it more expensive..the 2.2, 2.4, 3.1, 3.8, 5.0, 5.8 are discriptions as to how much of a fuel to air mixture for combustion the engine uses

theres no real disadvantage to having a 2.4 except that its a DOHC and maintenance might be more then a OHV dont quote me on it tho...they might actually end up being the same to fix..

advantages would be if you like speed its alot cheaper to get more out of a 2.4 since it takes better to mods..and stock engine itself can compete with some of the best sports cars out there already which is pretty good.

but the point really being...if your going to perform a swap on your can cuz theres sentimental value i would buy a reck or write off with the engine and tranny left alone and rip EVERYTHING out of the Z24 and put it into your car. cheaper buying the car for like 500-800 bucks and getting EVERYTHING then paying 1000 for an engine--200 for the ECU--300 for the wiring harness--etc

I believe the point he was trying to make is that he would be going through a lot of effort and cost just to increase his horse power due to the extra displacement. He wasn't saying the engine costs more just because of the extra .2L per se.

And the engine size (2.2, 2.4, 3.1 or 357, 409 of yester-year) isn't how much air/fuel mixture a vehicle uses. It's the volume of displacement an engine has (presuming a conventional piston-driven engine). It's calculated by the area of the piston * stroke length * number of cylinders giving you the approximate displaced volume.

You can't use air as a volume measurement because it's compressible. A 2.4 stock engine would use less air then a 2.4 turbocharged vehicle, but both still have the same displacement. Since a liquid is nearly uncompressable, you could think of displacement as the approximate amount of water that would be forced out of an engine after every cylinder has gone through 1 stroke.

cdru is right on this one.

id say it wouldnt really be worth the effort.. you could bore out your old motor... new internals.. then turbo it lot of money tho.

umm, i thought the 2.2L and the 2.4L was the same engine just bored + stroked a lil bit more, so really wouldnt need motor mounts.

and the disadvantages of it costing more cuz its .2L more? ,,,that doesnt even make sense..

it does so make sence, for that lil ass hp gain and .2L of displacement he gains from doing a $1300+ swap is useless for that same 1300 he could get forged internals and possibly a turbo set up lower the compresion ratio and hit it with 10 psi and be making close to 300hp

it has nothing to do with how many more litres it is that makes it more expensive..the 2.2, 2.4, 3.1, 3.8, 5.0, 5.8 are discriptions as to how much of a fuel to air mixture for combustion the engine uses

this makes you look real smart. might wanna do a lil bit of research before you say this again "2.2, 2.4, 3.1, 3.8, 5.0, 5.8 are discriptions as to how much of a fuel to air mixture for combustion" wow. your real smart.

I believe the point he was trying to make is that he would be going through a lot of effort and cost just to increase his horse power due to the extra displacement. He wasn't saying the engine costs more just because of the extra .2L per se.

my point exactly.

id say it wouldnt really be worth the effort.. you could bore out your old motor... new internals.. then turbo it lot of money tho.

dont even bother boring it, that .2L isnt gonna get you shit unless you just wanna spend money.

do what i said you could hit 300hp easy, just becasreful of torque steer.

Re: Engine swapping question

the 2.2 and 2.4 are not the same engine with a bigger bore on the cylinders on the 2.4...2.2 is OHV Over Head Valve
2.4 is DOHC Dual Over Head Cam
sorry if i made a mistake of what the displacement meaning...thought thast what it was cuz someone told me that...i didnt say i was a god when it came to car knowledge...but i DO know enough that those 2 engines are pretty different from each other for them not to be a direct swap...i dont care if i got the meaning for 2.2 or 2.4 wrong..im still right when i say you would need motor mounts ECU and the wireing harness...i might be wrong but i think the exhuast pipe would have to be cut shorter aswell since the header is in the back of the motor instead of the front like the 2.2 is...and you would need motor mounts cuz the motor is pretty much flipped...TB in front headers in back on the 2.4 and headers in front TB in the back for the 2.2

and as for the .2L more...you want to run a turbo setup on a 2.2 to hit 300HP but if you took EXACTLY the same parts or money for that matter to get that 300hp turbo setup on a 2.2 you could hit 350 on a DOHC...the benefit of going 2.4DOHC is way more worth the money when it comes to upgrading it...they have more potential...if you wanna do up an engine to its max then go with the 2.4 rather then the 2.2 cuz its not worth dropping 5 grand into the 2.2 to end up with like 300 horse when you could have spent that 5 grand on the 2.4 and got 400+

dont sit there and call me down AFTER someone else corrects me..cuz i know that when it comes to mechanics...you know jack by the sounds of it...if you cant tell the difference between the 2 cars...dont say anything

thanks cdru for correcting me on the whole displacement thing...i honestly thought it was the air to fuel ratio since thats what i was told

Re: Engine swapping question

but dont get me wrong...im not saying its not worth fixing up a 2.2..hell thats what im working on now...2.2 with a T25 turbo setup running 8 psi , but my point being..if you wanna do a swap..buy a write off with the engine and tranny untouched..and replace everything from the 2.2 with the 2,4

look for say 3000 bucks you get a nice turbo and a the forged internals, you put them in the 2.2, now if you spend that 3000 on the 2.4 liter swap, wdf are you gonna spend on making it hit 400hp? do you have millions of dollars to just pump into your ride? i know i dont.

Re: Engine swapping question

oh and btw, if you just wanna sit there throwing tons of cash at your ride to make it faster you could just throw the monte carlo 3.8 into it and get it so it can handle like 15psi there you go, 550+hp in a fwd car...

Re: Engine swapping question

i didnt say you had to be rich to do it...i said if you were to make a project of your car for the fastest car you can make out of a cavalier to go with the Z24 engine...and the guy that made the thread NEVER said anything about buying a damn turbo...so let up on the damn turbo subject...he wants to swap to a 2.4..im saying that its a better idea cuz after if he wants to upgrade AFTER, then the 2.4 will take to mods better

Re: Engine swapping question

so for the hassle i might as well just keep with a 2.2 litre engine, and for the shape my car is in, its cheaper to buy a new engine for a grand than to get a new car is why im interested in this, because i can get the engine put in for free. and i agree with mod'd cav, i just asked if it would be worth while, but not for all the hassle, and definatly no turbo, im just looking for a new engine, i mainly want my car to look nice, doesnt need to go 200 km/h

Viper Storm:

Not many people turbo 2.2's because they are push rod engines. What is the redline on them anyway? You could barely get a small turbo spooled before you hit redline. Pushrod engines dont do well in higher RPM's when a turbo would get spooled, thats why people put superchargers on them, no spool.

WTF are you talking about spending money? You're the one that came in here shooting off you mouth about a 3.8 TT AWD swap.

550 hp in a FWD car? That much hp in a FWD = smoke, smoke = no traction.

Mod'd Cav made a simple mistake (which was true to a certain extent) and I dont appreciate you riding him about it.

Re: Engine swapping question

faroutguy..it would be worth it to drop the z24 in ur car for a grand and free installation...if you can i would go for it right away...thor..thanks for backing me up but its not even the point..this nimrod is going back and forth on what he knows about vehicles..he talks about dropping AWD in a cav but then complains about me talking like you gotta be filthy rich to swap a fuckin Z24 and addin a turbo....but on the point of adding AWD on a cav...maybe you should learn yourself the difference between the 2 subcars before you go and try adding 4 wheel drive on a car when you dont even know the engine that would be turning those wheels...bigger bore on the cylinders ?...how long have you been in this forum to NOT know the difference between 2.2 and 2.4...fuck i mean its only discussed like what..every second day when some dumb fuck like you comes on here and says something like 2.2 SOHC or stock 2.2 taking 25psi on stock internals or some other shit and actually argues that its true , shit like that is right up there on the bullshit scale...learn some shit before you try and talk shit to other ppl

oh by the way...it wouldnt take millions to swap a Z24 and turbo it you fuck head maybe you should go back to school and learn math while your at it

no and you missed it aswell, from that post that was made there i was under the impression that i would have to convert to rwd that is why i asked about AWD, why cant you losers just fucking read? stop pulling words out of your ass and trying to put them in my mouth.

lol, and yea im new here, hey i assumed the engine would be the same, just for a lil bit more bore or stroke.

and mod'd_cav your still stupid for believing that those numbers ment some kind of shit for fuel/air mixture, who believes that shit? did you just fall off a turnip truck? i mean wdf? i made an honest mistake, im new here and your best excuse for being stupid is well someone told me that... LOL!!!!!
