intake question

i was wonder what aftermarket intake will work with my d16a1 motor. i was wonderin because my motor is goin in to the machine shop and the guy in there said to get an aftermarket intake and the turbo manifold but he wants me to try to get an equal length manifold and try to get an equal length intake. also the intake needs to be able to handle a lot of boost the guy says he is wants it up to 24lbs of boost so the intake will be under a lil bit stress. im trusting this guy he has over 30 yrs of engine mods. and he has the quickest integra around here turnin 9.9 at the 1/4 and he said he is building mine the same as his so. but also he can modify the intake and manifold to make them line up on the head also the guy tells me to look for a tranny upgrade im not sure what tranny can be bolted up to this motor and also it has to hold around 400 whp, so any info would be greatly appreiecated(forgot how to spell it) thanks JR

Re: intake question

Obviously your turbo guy has never built a D16A1 before.

There are no aftermarket intake manifolds available. The only options are to find a ZC intake manifold or fabricate your own.

The exhaust mainfold is a different story. Any D-series header/manifold will bolt up, but you will need to do some port matching.

No other tranny will swap or be worth the hastle of swapping, just install an LSD. The tranny is the least of your worries, it should hold up to whatever HP you can throw at it. Many people with mid to late '80s Hondas actually swap the D16A1 tranny internals into their tranny case.

24 lbs of boost?! What have you done to the motor to support this much boost? 24 lbs is insane!

well the guy is takin my crank and inlarging it 2 sizes and he is puttin in beefier rods and boreing it out .30 so and he said that 24 lbs is what he'd push and i even said thats crazy but he said that the motor will take it all day long. he is also doin the block posting and also is notchin the block and makeing the crank journals big enough for the new crank. he is also doin a 3 angle valve job with the new sodium filled valve(disipates heat better) also port and polish the intake and exhaust. so when i take the motor to him he is gonna be givin me a list of what he is doin to it so when i get that list then ill post it up on here for all u 1st gen guys to see. also if any d series exhaust will work then will any d series intake work to? and if not then how much fab will have to be done to get one to work?

The bolt pattern on the intake manifold for all other D and B series motors is totally different from the d16A1. You could construct some sort of adapter plate in order to get another IM to bolt up, but this will essentially lengthen the runners and possibly cause a bottle neck effect around the adapter plate. A custom fabricated or ported stock/ZC IM is the way to go!

And please, do yourself a favor and find out exactly what is being done to your motor. Your statements don't make sense. I understand what you're trying to say but you've got some of the terminology wrong and a little backwards.

It's like GI Joe used to say, "knowing is half the battle". If you do some research first and become familiar with how a motor/turbo works, you'll know if someone is trying to rip you off, and you won't sound like an idiot when someone asks you about your car. I personally would have walked out of this guys shop after the "400 hp, 24 lbs of boost all day long statement". Only if it's an all out drag car! Even then you'll be rebuilding this motor every season or building a new motor after yours blows up. But I'm just skeptical of shops that talk big and take your money without educating you first.

To me it sounds like your guy has never seen a D16A1 before and doesn't realize that it's not as easy to build as a B-series motor. The bore and stroke are different so the D16A1 won't be able to put out as much HP as a B-series but it will be able to beat it with torque, and that's really what gets you off the line. Any good machine shop will be more concerned with torque than hp. As an extreme example, you could invest $10,000 into a 400 hp motor with only 75 ft/lbs of torque and you'll soon find that you're not going anywhere quickly.

Please check out www.redpepperracing.com! There are many people there who have built turbo D16A1 motors, and will be able to tell you what you can realistically expect from this motor.

yeah i know what u mean by make sure the guy tells me what he is doin before he does it. this guy owns his own machine shop called ryders in mechanicsburg, pa he has built many d16a1 he also has a 87 integra with the same motor and turbo and he is running 23lbs of boost in his and he drives it on the weekend (his daily driver is a 65 impala blown) he also did say that because he know that the d16a1 doesn't have a lot of power torgue that is why he is grindin and modifiy everything to fit so in essence he is makein his own engine. i do trust this guy he built my dads 355 sprint motor and that motor is still around with 150,000 of hard beatin miles on it . also my dad is talk to the guy who is doin this so my dad does know a lot more about what he is doin as in what crank rods pistons valves everything cuz the guy told him and he was tryin to remeber what he said after he got home. but he has all the stuff to machine it out and fit everything so. i also talk to a lot of the imports that sit in town and they all said that anybody that has he money to get tom (the machine guy) to do their motor, they are untouchable on the street. so i think imma go with this guy just cuz of his knowledge and his reputation.
