Linkage or Tranny?????

I just recently purchased a 93' vtec. I was told that the shift cables needed some work done, because it was difficult to get it into 1st and 2nd. But, 2nd gear will not stay in...it will pop out when I let off the gas. I need some suggestions on what to look for? What it might be? And I'm really hoping that my synchros aren't going.

I'd check syncros and bushings first. Cables would be my last suspect, as i've never heard of anyone having them go bad (and the fact that it would cost the most.)
