99 transmission slipping

My 99 Jeep wrangler seems to slip going around turns and taking off from a complete stop. A transmission mechanic told me to put 1 extra quart of oil into it and it will stop. He say's Jeeps are famous for this and it's a quick easy fix. Is this true? Will this hurt my transmission?

Re: 99 transmission slipping

When you say "slips", what exactly do you mean? Is the transmission slipping, allowing the engine to race?

You shouldn't need to fill the trans beyond what is suggested in the owner's manual.

How many miles on the Jeep? If you've got a lot of mileage, then replacing the trans fluid with fresh could help out quite a bit.

Re: 99 transmission slipping

i have a 99 wrangler saraha, and my tranny was slipping as well,a family member of mine owns a tranny shop and he said on wranglers with three speed autos u need to change filter and fluid more often and adjust the tranny bands every 30 to 50 thousand miles,he did that along with some trans x or sea foam trans tune and it works like new,ive put it to the test and long trips and still shifts tight,i have 33' inch tires on mine so i added a tranny cooler,i recomend a tranny cooler to anyone with the auto,as many rpms as u push u need to keep it as cool as possible

When you check the fluid level in a TF999, you must check it with the tranny in "N", not "P" like most other trannys. If you check it while in "P" the level will read almost a qt. too high on the dip stick. This is often the reason why you hear about this particular tranny slipping, starving and so forth.
Your mechanic was basically right to tell you to over fill it, he just didnt know why. If you checked it in "P", over fill it, it will come out about right in "N".
Im sure the owners manual says to check it in "N".
