Currently I have a 95' Eclipse GS with a lot of miles (170,000+) and instead of getting a turbo for that engine, I thought it would be better to just get a new engine.
Now my problem is, I'm not totally up on every type of engine and all the bolt talk and such, so if someone could give me a few straight answers I would really appreciate it. Basically I just want a decent turbo or twin turbo engine(would that fit in a 95 eclipse?) that's not going to put me in debt the rest of my life (like under 3,000). Any suggestions would be great..and possibly a place to find the engine. |

Re: New Engine...
Okay. Your engine and a gst/gsx engine are complete different. Now to do a complete swap of your engine(420a) to a turbo (4g63t) is pretty crazy and costly. Your best bet would be just to take that money would spend on the swap and buy an already turbo car. You can pick one up for a few grand. My 95 gs-t cost me 4k and it had 85k miles on it, and I know you can get a 1g for cheaper than that.

Ok, so would it be better to just get a turbo for my current engine, or get a newer 420a and get a turbo? Like...what exactly would have to be done to convert it. The cost of labor and such isnt a problem since I have a few friends that can put it in for me, I'm just trying to be realistic about it and what engines can actually fit in the GS compartment.

The only engine you can swap out your 420a out with is another 420a. In order to swap in a 4g63t it would be extremely costly. And I haven't really heard of anyone doing it because it is so expensive. Like I said, for the money you would spend on swapping in the 4g63t engine you can just buy an awd 2g GSX and have some change. But if you are dead set on keeping your GS, then you are going to have to rebuild the 420a for the turbo or run really low boost on the turbo. I don't think those engines are rated for much of 220 hp or so. But if you are really interested in doing it look at the top of the performance section there is a thread about turboing a GS/RS. It should tell you everything you need.

My situation currently is that I already have to save pennies practically to get what I want with my bills, and I just bought the car a few months ago, so I still have about 2 years of payments to make on it. The last thing I can do is get another car =\ I have seen the turbo kits for the non-turbo eclipse/talon's but I would still have to buy a whole new engine for fear of the one I currently have not having much life left. I didn't think aside from space concerns that it would be that big of a deal to swap it with a turbo engine.
How expensive is it to get my engine re-built do you think? Although I believe one of my friends can do it, as he's building his eclipse's engine practically from the ground up and works as a mechanic. |

Re: New Engine...
just a bit of advice...if you're saving pennies to get what you want already, i wouldn't be looking into getting a turbo kit unless you have money to replace the engine if and/or when it blows up. not saying it's going to but people get turbo crazy and just want a little more boost and then BANG, you're wishin you'd have never done that.
