Post 00 Camry Backup Lights

BOTH backup lights on my 2000 Camry (Auto,4 Cyl, LE) do not turn on when the car is placed in the Reverse gear.

I've checked the fuse and it was fine (located in the passenger compartment, on the left side of the steering wheel, behind the coin holder). I've changed both bulbs for the backup lights, but that didn't fix the problem either.

My next guess is the backup light switch, which I found out is located behind the engine block, close to where engine/transmission are mated.

Anyone out there that has experienced a similar problem? Could the problem be something other than the backup light switch? What's the best way to change the backup light switch? Where to buy parts at a reasonable price? Tools necessary for the fix?

thanks !

Re: 00 Camry Backup Lights

see if you have a wiring harness running along a trunk hinge that flexes frequently

Re: 00 Camry Backup Lights

The Haynes manual has a test for the reverse/neutral safety switch that might help. The book is only about $15-20.

Re: 00 Camry Backup Lights

hey, I just fixed this problem on my car beatifully. It's not caused by defective switch if you don't get a code. check the wires in your trunk. The red-black should be for your back-up light. Carefully track the wiring as deep as possible. Mine is cut somewhere almost out of the truck, just allowing me to see it.

Thumbs up Re: Re: 00 Camry Backup Lights

Thanks for your response, after reading your message I checked the wires in the trunk of the car and sure enough, they had snapped.

It usually means you have a bulb burned out in the rear. Check all the rear lights including the high mounted brake light and also any double filament bulbs in the rear.
