Re: 91 Cavalier RS Engine Swap
People have swapped in 2.4, 3.1, even shoehorned a 3.8 and a 350 in there. There are even people nutty enough to ponder putting an RX7 rotary engine in as well. It all depends on how much skill you have and how fat your wallet is. Anything is possible if you have enough of the latter, even if you have little of the former.
Remember that if you upgrade to a "modern" engine, your going to have to bring along with it all the emmissions, electrical, and computer as well since much of it has signficantly changed since '91. Check out the performance section of this forum and there are several threads similar to this topic already going.

Re: 91 Cavalier RS Engine Swap
A buddy of mine cut the Z24 body off his car and dropped it onto the frame of a Firebird. Kept the engine and the RWD...
A more modest and easier approach is dropping in either a 2.8L V6, 3.1L V6 or, if you are lucky enough to find one, a 3400MPFI/SFI V6 engine...

Re: 91 Cavalier RS Engine Swap
How does one drop a Cavalier body onto the frame of a Firebird? The F-body Camaro/Firebird has always been unibody, there is no frame.1967-1981 had a X-car style front stub frame, but it ended under the front seat passenger's floorboard. The 1982-up was totally unitized (sorta like the 1960-1968 Chrysler C body,1965-1972 B body, and 1960-1976 A body cars).

Re: 91 Cavalier RS Engine Swap
Cavalier has a unibody as well...i guess you could just cut everything from the rocker panels up off and put it on the subframe...
