How to change the oil filter on an SL2?
I'm not stupid. Really.
I bought a couple of ramps from the local auto parts store, got the right filter and 4 quarts of their finest vintage. Went home, drove up on the ramps, got under, successfully drained the oil pan, successfully replaced the drain plug, and successfully poured the 4 quarts into the engine block. So far so good. BUT I CAN'T GET THE *******, ***** ** ****** *****, ***** ****, ****** OIL FILTER OFF THE ******* *** **** *** ** * ***** ENGINE BLOCK!!!!! It is in an awkward place, down by the right front wheel. I have a filter wrench, but can't seem to even get the wrench anywhere near where it needs to be. Do they sell a special "Saturn SL2 oil filter wrench"? What do you personally use? Is it true you can puncture the filter with a screwdriver, then use the inserted screwdriver like a lever/handle? Thanks!! |

dont advise the screwdriver method, if your using a band style filter wrench it can be a little tricky. put the wrench on the filter(make sure it is going in the right direction) turn your wrist to put light tension on the band then push your hand as far up as you can, pull down. No special wrench although the plier style is easier to use

Re: How to change the oil filter on an SL2?
my oil filter wrench works great, it clamps on to the end of the filter and when you loosen it, it grabs the filter tighter. i hear the plyers work good too.

Instead of ramps, use the jack and remove the right front wheel. Next, remove the plastic access panel near the bottom of the fender liner. I use the molded plastic socket style wrench.

I wouldn't use a screwdriver either.
I have that wrench that fits on the end too. It works very well. Normally, on the replacement, I don't tighten it too much, and take it off by hand. I haven't had one leak yet leaving it "snugged good" by hand. |
