Unhappy tranny, fuel pump or fuel filter clogged? help!

I have a 1991 Honda Prelude 2.1 Si. Love my little car, bought it in March from the original owner. Never had a problem with it up until last month. First the oil literally disappeared so I had that changed when I was only 300 miles from when it was supposed to be done. Then it started overheating like crazy! Had the thermostat changed and if fixed it... now... it's doing this whole intermittent "sluggish, hestitating, blah I don't want to go anywhere-slam on the gas and it takes off thing". Took it to the mechanic. He said the tranny is going. Talked to the Honda dealership service advisor, she said since it's intermittent that flushing the tranny should do the trick and to check for metal shards and chunks. So I had the mechanic do that... no metal chunks or shards so I thought cool that should do it... nope!

The car shifts fine, at least to me it seems to be shifting the way it always has since I've owned it. Would a bad batch of gas clog my new fuel filter? Could the fuel pump be going out? Is it really the transmission dying on me? I don't want to drop $1200 on a new tranny if I don't have to. Any suggestions?
