Changing the oil in a 2003 Jetta

Hey, I am wanting to start changing the oil myself in my Jetta but don't know how, does anyone have any answers for me (hopefully ones where I don't need to go out and buy the book)? Thanks for the help.

Re: Changing the oil in a 2003 Jetta

What motor???

(1) Pull the drain plug (on oil pan) make sure you have bucket to catch your oil.

(2) Remove your oil filter.

(3) After every thing is drained (I) clean around with rag (don't like oil every where)

(4) Put drain plug back in.

(5) With your finger smear some oil around the oil filter gasket. Put filter on not to tight but tight.

(6) Put your new oil in (do not over fill)

(7) Start the car and look under the car to make sure you have no leaks.

(8) Turn car off. Check oil with your dip stick (lol) Add some more if needed.

(9) DONE

Re: Re: Changing the oil in a 2003 Jetta

I think it applies with all of the engines, but for sure on my VR6 the oil filter isn't some orange can you can see like on domestic cars. It's a cartridge filter, so it hides inside a permanant filter mount. If you crawl under the car there will be what looks like an oil filter cap(plastic), and in the center will be a metal drain plug that comes out so the oil doesn't get all over your hands when you pull the filter. You'll need a filter wrench, or really big socket to go over the plastic "nut" on the bottom of the lid. You'll see
