Trans shifting problem 98 GC

I recently posted looking for error codes and since then I have had Trans problems and read some of the posts. My 98 4.0 Auto -had the Check engin light come on about 4 days ago every thing seemed fine except it did exactly drive right, then one morning it would not get out of 2nd if I held it, reverse seems fine but hard to tell. I droped the pan and nothing more than what seems like normal wear, changed fluid and filter, no luck. Also fule MPG was good, I started watching that at 2.65/gal, now 3+.

Could it be the whole trans or comp? would disconnecting the battery clean codes? and I can't get codes out.

Any thought. Don't know about dropping $1500 for a trans.

One other thing a month ago the TPS was off and reset.

I had the same problem with an 88 jeep . It would not shift out of 1st gear a week after I had power washed the motor . Saturday morning bright and early when no-one was around , I drove to the chrysler dealer about 1/2 mile away and blew a heater hose on the way . They replaced the TPS--- about $100 . Problem solved and had the truck back by lunch time. good luck

Re: Trans shifting problem 98 GC

My 98 JGC did the same thing and it turned out to be speed sensor on the transmission. replaced it for $25 bucks and worked just fine. Engine light went out on its own.

That happend on my '96 GC, and it was a speed sensor also, when i looked it was simply unplugged. Plugged it back in and it was good as new
